Only the crypt is worth a visit, all the other places are closed and private, so it's possible only to see the facades; moreover, at some point, the audio guide is suggesting to move to some parts of the Industrial Area, but it's private so impossible to do it, so the audio guide is describing places that cannot be viewed/visited. Sagrada Familia visit with audio guide costs 26 euros, and there are so many things to see, Colonia Guell is not worth 9.5 euros. Avoid it!

On the outskirts of BCN, a relief to so much destination overflowing with visitors. We met the church where Gaudi experienced his innovations and the colony of Eusebi Güell. Excellent guided tour by Dani. In addition to approaching Gaudí, we have a global experience on the history and economic and social development of the textile industry of the late S. 19th and early 20th century.

Okay, so I thought I was only coming to visit the Gaudi crypt, but ended up buying a ticket to visit both the old industrial colony of Colonia Guell and the crypt. I got the audio guide version of the entrance as I usually do, which was only 1 euro more.
The audio-guide is quite informative as it takes you around each of the sites of interest, with lots of history and background information. Although most of the sites are private dwellings or otherwise not open to the public.
The Church designed is of course the highlight of the visit and to be honest, I've run out of superlatives to describe the work of Antoni Gaudi. The church will be familiar to anyone who has seen Sagrada Familia, with it's organic, almost skeletal looking supporting columns, the nature inspired stained glass windows and his signature Catalan Modernisme interiors.
Overall, I enjoyed the visit, but I do think that the ticket price is a little expensive when you consider that there's actually very little to see in the town since most of the houses that are described in the audio-guide are actually not open to the public.
The staff really need some more training too. They looked bored and annoyed. Okay, I get that it can be quiet at times, Colonia Guell is far out from the main tourist circuit in Barcelona and people do have to make a considerable effort to visit. The last thing I need is an attitude.

I didnt know what to expect but I went with a friend who told me that Guell opened this "small city" for all his workers so I assumed since you have to pay to enter that you were allowed to visit all the different buildings (school, convent, factory, the different houses where people like the doctor or the teacher used to live) in actual fact you can only see the houses from outside and to know which is which you are forced to buy a guided tour, basically a real rip off.The only building you are allowed to enter is the church which is indeed designed by Gaudi, it is really great but definelty not worth the price and the trip!
Better to use the money to see the Sagrada Familia and the Parc Guell in Barcelona!

Inspired by various tour operators, which stop at the Colonia before going to Montserrat, we did the same using a car. The place is quite abandoned - and is a leftover of a number of unsuccessful projects. Firstly, Mr. Guell's (a businessman and Gaudi's sponsor), which had grand plans for his textile business and also Gaudi's. Gaudi wanted to build an enormous church (commissioned by Mr. Guell) and ended up basically with a "basement" and the rest unfinished. The roof, windows and pillars are nice, but its definitely not a "must to visit" when in Barcelona.

My wife and another couple wanted to visit somewhere outside Barcelona but not too far as my friend is heavily pregnant and is due any day now.
We decided to take a drive to Colonia Guell in St Coloma de Cervelo. There lies a delightful Catalan villiage that was owned by a rich textile family Eusebe Guell ( of the Guell family) He built the town to house his workers and was famous for taking a real interest in the welfare of the inhabitants by investing in the arts and development of the villiage.
He also commisioned the famous Guadi to build a church for him. The Church is vintage Gaudi with his characteristic 'lines of nature' and colourful mosaic stone walls. Unfortunatley due to a downturm in the economy the work was never finished as the Guells ran out of money.
It is a very little know church and I think it is well worth a visit. There is a delightful square where you can enjoy a perfect Catalan meal.

i went to my Barcelona 5 days trip in october. being one of my favorite cities, this is the fifth trip and still something new to enjoy- this is about 20 minutes drive outside the city in a small village- accessible by train and a short uphill walk- the best thing is that one cannot imagine a beautiful church- completely designed and built during gaudi's life time- can attract so few visitors! we visited in a weekday afternoon- and there were 8 of us - with 2 other couples!!! the place was a gem- with all the beautiful and ingenious design by the grand master ( he used this as a pilot project for the infamous Sangra Familia). It was well kept and still used as the local church. My photographic friend was having a fantastic time - taking all the photos at any angles he liked - as the place was near empty. and the village where it was situated was interesting itself- with a good information leaflet - free from the tourist info centre. i really rank this as one of the top 10 sites to visit in and around Barcelona!

If you're into Gaudi, you have to see this place - it's where the concept of the hyperbolic / inverted catenarian design was first used, and they have a far superior model of it than you will see anywhere else - they thoughtfully put a mirror on the floor, so that the suspended model appears right side up.
You can reach Colonia Guell from the Placa d'Espanya station on line 8 - staff will sell you a combined train / entry ticket. (14 Euros when we went) It's about 20 minutes out of town and a 5 minute walk from the Metro - trains every 20 mins.
A couple of nice bars in the village are a bonus.
We have met professional guides in Barcelona who haven't been here ! Go, - you won't be disappointed.

We went there with our teenage daughters and we enjoyed the visit of the crypt and all the colony, too. The first thing you have to do is go to the visitors center. There is an exhibition there of the factory and the original plans of Gaudí. It's there where you have to buy the tickets. There are some marked paths to visit this part of the village.
You must be aware that there is a Mass celebration at 11.00 and/or at 13.00. During the mass time, you can't visit the crypt. The visit around the village can take half a day. There are only a couple of bars /restaurants.
You can arrive by car (there is plenty of parking), bus or train. You must wear walking shoes.

We booked a private tour using Viator and the reservation didn’t get to the local provider - supposedly. We took ourselves by taxi to Colonia Guell Gaudi Crypt and LOVED IT. Fascinating small village established in the 1890s to keep workers near factories. The Church/Crypt was designed by Antoni Gaudi and is beautiful. His full design was never realized but what is there is wonderful. The village homes were designed by architects, too, many of brick. Great walking tour. Tasty restaurants. Go there!

saludos

Does T-10 Zone 1 Card cover the train trip to Colonia Guell?
Written October 13, 2017
You will need a Zone 2 card. It's just beyond the inner zone, about a 20 minute trip.

Saludos.

You can go to the information centre to get a map. There is a fee if you want to visit the church designed by Gaudí. There is an audio-guide available at a charge.
If you follow the route, listen to the audio guide and visit the church, allow 2 to 3 hours.
