We drove to the parking lot that is up the side of the mountain so the hike to the top was minimized. It’s an easy trail to the top if you are reasonably fit (maybe an hour to hour and half walk up and then back) and the view from the scenic lookout is 360 degrees. It’s well worth the minimal effort required. The paragliders were flying in full force taking off regularly while we were there from the Lookout summit and the weather was sunny and clear. You can see the Arrow Lake below and all the smaller towns in the area. If you have a spare morning or afternoon, highly recommended. It’s make the beer afterwards taste even better!

The drive up Buchanan can be done by a small car, with an intrepid driver who possesses care for the oil pan, for most of the year. In a reasonably useful SUV, it's practically a doddle. The parking lot generally has a mix of giant trucks, smaller cars, and a raft of little SUVs. Subaru might have the edge, but that's my bias :) The switchbacks at the bottom should be done carefully, the giant puddle near the top isn't as deep as it looks, and the topmost part has the biggest, crunchiest rocks on the road. Normal caution aside, the route up is quite safe, doesn't have too much exposure, is well-marked, and is often snow-free by late June. At the top, you find an amazing old fire tower with cool displays, picnic tables, an old hang-gliding ramp, acceptable outhouses, and a moderate and pleasant circle trail. Apparently a ton of mountain bike trails abound, but that's not my jam. The views, on the other hand, are just phenomenal. Seriously, it's worth the trip up.

Fantastic place to put your Kootenay visit in context! This is a very accessible old fire lookout just above and west of Kaslo on Kootenay Lake. Hike, drive, bike, etc. You choose.

The views are so amazing. You can see far down Kootenay lake--it is breath taking! If you are driving up, a car is NOT ideal. The route is up an old logging road. Also, I found the drive up was a bit tense for me. There are lot's of places where you are driving along a drop off. So if you are like me, you may have to close your eyes at times. Lol. But ultimately, it is worth it!

The turnoff on Highway 31 between Kaslo and New Denver is not well marked and the road is best done in dry weather since it is a beat up logging road. Low slung cars not recommended, 4WD or AWD vehicles no problem. The view from the top is of Kootenay Lake and its mountain ranges, above the smoke, in the sunshine. There is a pit toilet and a picnic table up there but not much else, it is an old fire tower site. There are little trails to explore too. Take water. This is one of the few mountain top vistas you can get to in the area (also Idaho Peak). Good for small kids, no hiking needed.
