Our family of 5 adults had a fantastic time on a 2-hour ride with our wonderful guide Ezequiel. We started on country roads past charming farms and pastures with cows and goats, onto trails that wound over hills between plantain orchards, down small side streets in the town of las Galeras, and then back to the Ranch along unspoiled white beaches. A delightful trip that everyone loved, even those with little experience. Horses were sleek and healthy looking. We thought 2 hours was perfect.

This is a difficult review to write because I realise we are not like other people who ride horses, but I feel that it is important to write it just in case there are other people like us who may benefit from it.
We are horse owners, but our horses are more like family pets. We ride in halters only and pretty much have an attitude that the horse's decisions are respected. Having said that, we obviously did not expect a business that takes people for horse rides to have the same attitude as us. But my daughter has always had a dream of riding on a beach, so we researched all the places in Samana and chose Rudy's because it seemed like they cared for their horses the best.
When we were making arrangements for the trek, we were not asked our weight, which my daughter said was a red flag, but I assumed, they would match us to the horses once we got there, as others have said in the review. However, when we arrived (15 minutes late admittedly) the horses were already saddled up and one of them was clearly way too small to carry my weight. I was uncomfortable riding a horse this small, but the guide assured me the horse was strong. However, I felt uncomfortable enough about the size/weight ratio to dismount every time there was a hill or an extreme downhill (which was a lot on the trek we chose to do).
The other shocker for us (who are not used to Western style riding and do not normally ride with bits) was the bit used. It is a standard Western curb, but what that means is, that even with a slight pull on the reins, the pressure on the horse's tongue can be quite intense. This also made us very uncomfortable. Luckily there wasn't ever any need to pull on the reins at all. The horses were calm and well behaved and our guide Robby was lovely and made us feel alright about dismounting every five minutes. Personally, I don't think the horses particularly enjoyed the ride and that made us not really enjoy it. However, this is all on us for expecting way too much, and not at all a reflection on Rudy's. Rudy was very easy to communicate with and his staff are all lovely and the price was very reasonable. But if you are precious about your horses like we are, I would say skip a horse ride while in the DR.

Great trip, saw lots of nature, calm horses that are treated well. Our guide was Ezekiel who was also really helpful and explained some plants.

Amazing time with our knowledgeable guide and friendly horses into some of the more secluded spots of Samana. They have several trails where you can discover pristine beaches, hiking, ancient caves and enjoy fresh coconuts straight from the trees!! Highly recommend when in Las Galeras.

It was so good to see the healthy happy horses! The second we got back the saddles were removed and the horses roamed free rolling in the grass like happy puppies! Rudy is very welcoming and kind. The horses are loved and well taken care of and treated with so much respect!! Ezekiel was our guide and was wonderful as well. English speaking guide available upon request. Epic experience!! I highly recommend Rudy's Rancho!!

I would recommend Rudy‘s Rancho.
Rudy picked us up from our hotel and introduced us to the horses. The horses know where they are supposed to go, you don’t have to do much. The trips are suited for beginners.
We went along the beach and visited a cave as well. Rudy speaks English, German, French and Spanish. The taught us a lot about the Dominican culture.
