As war memorials go this is impressive. Rather than a wee statue in town this is a grand ring of stone - looking like a crown from a distance - visible n the headland over the village from miles around.

Worth the walk up there, and you can see the nearby castle and the coast for miles once there.

For many years I laboured under the impression that this was a folly built by a landowner and only recently realised li was not so on a recent walk from Stonehaven to Dunottar Castle we detoured off the path to the memorial,

This is one of the most impressive cenotaphs I have seen. The shape is iconic and the stonework, in its exposed location, has weathered majestically, and when you read the names it reminds us of the sacrifice young men made, especially in the Great War, from every town and village across our country.

The elevated location gives great views all round but the real reason for visiting, although we may not know it at the time, is to pay our respects.

It is a steep walk from the harbour but well worth it. (There is a car park near Dunnottar Castle if necessary). The memorial, designed by local architect John Ellis, is a tribute to both World War dead. Pleased to see that the Merchant Navy is also included. The views are superb and it is an area of peace and quiet.

Stonehaven's War Memorial on the Black Hill is one of the most striking monuments I have ever encountered. It is a unique and beautifully designed structure, and a very fitting memorial to lives lost during times of conflict. It is set in a lovely spot overlooking Stonehaven, and offering gorgeous views over the sea and along the coastline towards Dunnottar castle. A place I have visited often, but will never tire of. A must visit, especially if on route walking to the castle along the picturesque cliff top path. Romantic, sometimes windswept, but a place of Peace. Also a good place to fly a kite!

Stonehaven War Memorial is a peaceful, tranquil and really rather beautiful spot. I was very lucky with the weather on my trip and with blue skies and a brisk breeze keeping the moisture in the atmosphere at bay, the view from the memorial is spectacular.

It's quite a climb to get to the peak, especially as I picked a spot that, while close to the hill, meant that I had to clamber through very sharp gorse bushes to get there. Clearly I wasn't the first as there was a fairly clear path (read goat-track) leading me through the shrubbery, but for the better prepared there are proper footpaths leading to the memorial along the coastline.

I spent a very happy hour or so pottering about the place and photographing the monument itself and the lovely views of the countryside from the top of the hill. You can see Dunnottar Castle to the South of this spot too. If you have a mind to, I think you can walk from the memorial to the castle if you want to.

Stopped off on the walk back from Dunnottar Castle. The views are amazing and has seats all round. These seats were very welcome. Views at sunrise must be amazing

Quite the walk up the hill to see the Memorial. Once up there there was not much to see.there not much there in remembrance to people concerned. Maybe because it is from so long ago. Would be nice if the area di something with it. Other places in the borders do poppies and some people flowers.

Situated on the headland overlooking Stonehaven and Dunottar Castle it is an impressive war memorial. Either walk up from the town or down from the castle to get there as no parking on the access road.

Stands like a beacon over Stonehaven town and has wonderful views over the town and harbour.

A fitting and touching memorial to WW1, WW2 and many others.

A great place to sit and reflect
