Rock churches of Ivanovo are very unusual place with great cultural significance. You can left your luggage in the guest house near the train station Ivanovo and walk around 1 hour to the churches. Alternatively you can catch a taxi. Maybe it is not the must-see place, but definitely the most mystical place in Bulgaria.

Along the scenic valley of the Roussenski Lom river about 20 kilometres south of Rousse, medieval churches have been carved into the cliffs above the river. They are noted for their frescos dating from the 13-14 century painted on the rock walls. From the parking lot a ten minute climb up stairs brings one to the church. Alternatively there is... More

The rock-hewn churches are protected by UNESCO and represent very old paintings in the rocks. The Last Supper painting is much older compared to Da Vinci one. However prepare for lots of stairs!

In the past few days I visited quite a few rock churches/monasteries but this was a truly impressive one. The frescoes in the church are almost untouched by the time and climate. The church is build on a very high rock and I still cannot figure out how people have done this. This is a truly incredible place and it... More

A complex of rock hewn churches in the valley of the Roussenski Lom River, in north east Bulgaria will spark your soul with their mural fresco of 14th century . You will also enjoy the beautiful landscape around the area on the top ridges. The environment is very perfect.

This small church cut high on a cliff is certainly worth a visit as the ancient frescoes are so well preserved considering the location and situation. It is a UNESCO site, so a very important artefact in the history of Bulgaria.

Nestled within the Rusenski Nature Park is this gem. The path leading up to the monastery takes you along beautiful nature scenes. I was greeted by dozens of blue dragon flies. Getting to the top of the path the panorama reveals the many rock openings of the monatery cells. Quite incredible as access to those hights is a challenge. The... More

A good 10 minutes hike up and you will reach this place. You can either take up the steps or the slope up to you. We took the stairs up and the slope on the way down, en route a beautiful cliff for the view of the plain. The church itself has fresco in it, not being restored.

After a moderate climb, you come to the rock church. It is amazing inside, with all of the well-preserved frescos on the walls and ceilings. I found it odd that you are allowed to touch them! The panoramic view from the rock just further on is breathtaking.

Near the border of Romania and Bulgaria is a well hidden gem of the church, built from 12th to the 13th or 14th century, located up on a steep cliff. It's well worth the exhausting climb once you see the magnificent frescos inside the cave and marvel at the breathtaking view. There's a restroom near the souvenir shop but you... More
