It is actually fairly difficult to acquire help in communicating with local businesses. Many speak little to no English or French. Surprisingly, however, the local businesses and people are much friendlier than some of the so-called "English" establishments. One, The "Welsh" Snack Bar, is downright hostile and rude to foreigners. Go figure.

Beautiful beach, but this summer (August 2023) it has been very dirty, with a lot of algae, plastic, pieces of rope, etc. on its extensive sand and even floating in the water. It is a shame!
It is almost impossible to take a shower with so much rubbish in the water, the Alcobaça council should be ashamed and take action.

I was fascinated by this place, a shell-shaped bay with a very attractive beach. It must be fantastic in the middle of summer without the inconvenience of the "norths"...
An excellent place for a walk by the sea, visiting the famous dune.
Campsite on the coast, lots of accommodation and services.
Parking and easy access.
I have to go back, it wasn't enough time to enjoy what that area has to offer 🤩

One of Portugal's best kept secrets. The only truly safe swimming beach on the Atlantic sheltered by a shell shaped bay with fine sand. Many excellent restaurants in the town and region. Only an hours drive from the Lisbon airport the town is close to numerous Unesco world heritage sites and attractions in towns such as such as Nazare (15mins) Caldas d'Arenha (15 mins), Batalha and Alcobaca (each 20 mins) Obidos (30 mins), Perfect for a romantic getaway or for families (due to the safe beach). There are few places like this in Portugal and proabably Europe. we come back year after year to recharge

Just returned following 2 fantastic weeks in Sao Marinho do Porto, Portugal. This was our first visit to Portugal flying with TAP airline. I had read the reviews about TAP cancellations and poor customer service. We travelled from Manchester to Lisbon, the scheduled airline meant low prices, free hold luggage and meal / drinks on board. Only 30 minute delay on our return journey from Lisbon.
Sao Martinho is truly a wonderful place with lots to do and see. The natural harbour is one of the safest places to bathe on the Silver coast and indeed the entire Atlantic coast of Portugal. This is what attracted us with three children aged 12, 10 and 6. The beach was spotless with the sea stirring the sand up appearing like a glitter berry drink hence Silver coast. On certain parts of the beach there are life guards on duty. The board walk round to the 'lagoon side' was very exciting with the discovery of a massive sand dune delighting the chidlren.
The people in Portugal are extremely friendly and courteous, slowing down every time near crossings. The cost of dining out and general shopping was surprising low, typically for 6 of us to dine (3 adults and 3 children) was approximately 65 euros including wine and desserts! Samar and a Casa restaurants are highly recommended. Intermarche supermarket is a 10 minute walk or a few minutes if hiring a car. The local shops all stock water and wine - 5L water around 60-90 cents.
We visited Obidos and was, without question, the highlight of holiday - will say no more, you just need to go and see the beauty yourself. We hired a tour guide at the start point in Obidos, 20 euros and we got all the history and facts for our group of six, dodging the busy high street area - definitely recommend.
One lady informed us that Sao Martinho is how the Algarve was 30 years ago, unspoilt and Portugese. This is their holiday destination so that speaks volumes. Be sure to brush up on a little Portugese as SMP is 'rustic' with a number of restaurants struggling to speak English (this was fantastic in our opinion). The cleanliness of the streets and toilets was brilliant. Even the beachside toilets were clean with hand wash facilities and soap.
Now then, the weather. This is a curious climate and don't expect the heat of the Algarve or Med. Most mornings were overcast but the sun always burned through leaving some tremendously hot days and fantastic sun sets. We were informed this was a cool period for Sao Martinho but it didn't rain and those overcast mornings allowed us to walk around and hike in comfort.
Bayside apartments, if considering, is in a ideal location to beach and town centre.
Would we go back? Yes, we are looking at planning for next year.

The council only clean this beach in the summer period, the rest of the year it is down to people like me who collect the plastics and glass and discarded fishing gear from the beach.

The seashell shaped beach of Sao Martinho is brilliant for kids as it's sheltered and gently sloping. There's an 'in water' Activity Centre and pedals are available to hire too. Tents to protect from the sun are also available to hire by the day or week.

Visited Sao Martinho do Porto in September, 2013 with my wife and two-and-a-half year-old daughter.

Tremendous !

The weather was lovely, the beach was fantastic ... all-in-all this was a truly great break.

We stayed in a self-catering apartment, and visited the market every day. We had a coffee and a cake at the nearest cafe.
