It is forbidden to drive inside the territory of Dam, but the best look is from aside so you can see all the huge building and take a photos. But be careful, there are no fence on the road sides!

The Enguri hydroelectric power station on the Enguri River on the way to Svaneti, started construction in 1961 and was finally completed in 1987. In 2015 Enguri dam was given cultural heritage status. Has spectacular views and must see place.

One of the highest dams but the big thing here are the stray dogs. Not lots but there are no food outlets or stalls so please take some food in for them. I'm so disappointed I didnt have anything for the dogs here. The views are amazing but the dogs need your love.

We stopped over to see the view from the Dam following the recommendation of Dodo, a lovely lady who host us at her Qedi Guesthouse in Jvari. She used to work there when she was young (newspaper articles talk about her!) so we were curious to see the place with our own eyes. From the Dam, there is a stunning view towards the valley and the lake. Good in any season for a quick overview stroll. Recommended on your way to Mestia/Svaneti, etc.

Stopped off on way to Mestia as a way of breaking up the trip. Fine for a quick break but not much to see and better views along the valley.

This is one of the biggest dams that I have ever seen and therefore very impressive. You seem only to be able to look down on it from a great height and not walk on it. The toilets though clean were squats. The very nice lady who took the money for the toilets showed me where there was a tap and soap to wash my hands. The tap in the ladies’ toilets didn’t work.

Coming from the town of Jvari you must drive uphill into the reserve around Inguri Dam. There is a parking lot but some cars can go further, to where the buildings are. They were closed when we were there.
The dam itself is monumental. It is an awe-inspiring construction from the Soviet era that took around 30 years to finish. The lake is embedded into the beautiful surrounding nature. The colour of the water is attractive. From here you can go on exploring the upward Valley of the river whose flow is stopped by the dam. Downwards The Valley is not attractive at all.
