The Fortress of Fagaras played an important part in the history of Transylvania , due to its location at the footsteps of the mountain pass from the Fagaras mountain range and also because it was laying along the road between Sibiu and Brasov.
It was built originally at the the early 1300's and got expended and reshaped in the coming centuries.
Visiting fee is 20 Ron/adult and you have included in the price the visit to the Fagaras County Museum , where you can see exhibits ranging from the pre-Roman times till the modern age.
Especially interesting is the Jail Tower/ Dungeon tower - at the lower level you have the posters with the medieval torture tools - but for me more interesting was the upper level where there is an exhibit - on posters - about the resistance movement against the Communist regime and the stories of those who stood up and got persecuted -along with their families. It is very interesting to understand what a dark period it was for Romania. Also you shall keep in mind that the Fagaras Fortress was a political prison between 1948 and 1960 - for the enemies of the Communism - some very bad things have happened here.
Overall a very nice fortress - pity that the artilleries bastions were closed for visiting - with a very interesting museum... so when you are in the area I do recommend you stop here for a few hours.

A well preserved castle in which the renovation still continues.
It has some parts which have to be better presented!
A museum is in the first floor of the castle with many interesting exhibits!!!
You have to visit it on the way to Brasov or on the way to Sibiu!!!
Ticket is 4€ per person.

The interior of this place is well preserved and taken care of. Unfortunately the exterior is under renovation and the pace of the renovation is as fast as a sloth. We could not go on the walls or take a stroll through the outside along the moat because these areas were closed for renovation. However, there is a lot to see inside and the place is clean and very well taken care of. Parking around the Fortress is free and I imagine that during high season it would be hard to find free parking. We went in May on a Friday afternoon, so no problem finding parking and the place was fairly empty. We paid 20 Rons per person and they only take cash, so bring cash with you.

I enjoyed my visit at Fagaras Fortress. I wanted to visit it a few years back but it was on renovation. The renovations are still hapening today but you can visit the inside of the fortress which has a very interesting museum and a very beautiful Tower Hall.
The museum was interesting, well preserved and maintained, everything looked nice: it had also English translations for foreign visitors.
The price of the ticket was 20 RON per person I definitely found it interesting and worth a visit if you are nearby Fagaras

Fine fortress with an impressive moat. Undergoing heavy restoration and the furniture is not very interesting. The museum is however worth a visit with well displayed objects and explanations also in English.

Unfortunately the whole place is under major renovations, and it looks like this will not be finished soon...I walked all around the fortress, it's an impressive place after all, and it will probably look ok once the works are done, though I feel the finished or about to be finished part look too 'new'...

Take a medieval fort in a wonderfully romantic setup and knock down anything old in it. Then replace with an approximation of what you thought it might have been when it was new. Skip any useless elements like fireplaces, ceilings, or anything complicated.
Go further and knock down fireplaces and cut in new door openings. Then refurbish the rooms with the same oversize dark and poorly executed furniture in a "naive-medieval-like-meets-hollywood-cheap-medieval-style". With some ordinary old furniture reproduction dotted about the place in between the silly countless black chairs, the historic fort of Fagaras promises to be successfully turned in a Disneylandish + don't touch the exhibits fusion, any reminder of anything old having been efficiently obliterated for the supreme enjoyment of the masses...

First is opened less then 30% of the building , they claimed to be under restoration. But you gonna discover later as nobody told you when you buy tickets . Second if you have baby in stroller , you better stay outside as they will not let you in. Also nobody told you about that when you buy tickets. Impaired people don't have access.

A sensitive progress versus last years. Even under wirk outside, it worth a visit for the indoor setup. The whole toor puts Fagăraș close to Bran Castle or Corvinilor Castle! We have admired the Crown Hall! The little shop at the end has a lot of surprising souvenirs!
