We only managed to visit the South Melbourne night market. The highlight is the slew of food trucks serving cuisines from all over the world parked around the market. It is also abuzz with live music. Within the market, not all stalls are open so it may appear quiet. Besides selling produce, the inside of the market is also home... More

This is a must-visit market if you're ever in Melbourne. Unfortunately it isn't open all days of the week. We went on Wednesday and they had just opened. There are many different shops from clothing to honey to organic free range meats. We had the paella at simply Spanish and it was OUTSTANDING, I highly recommend it, loads of fresh... More

Something for everyone of this market! Fashion designers; cheap China dresses and expensive silk caftans. Huge array of produce and lunch spots with fresh food. I had a plum, prosciutto and feta salad from Proper and son, then berry cheesecake for dessert- yuum!

Not as busy as the Melbourne market, and smaller, but the quality of the food is amazing. Yesterday we tried the Hawaiian Pokes with rice and raw salmon or raw tuna (or tofu) which was absolutely fantastic. Before choosing we browsed the whole market as that doesn't take too long, and we even got a seat after waiting 2 minutes.... More

Mixed business markets. We visited early evening on a Thursday and not all stalls were open but it was still a great experience

I attended the market for the night. It was amazing. A great mix of stalls and the food was endless (and so so so yummy). I found it pleasant than Vic Market because whilst it was smaller and still had a big crowd, it was less overwhelming and yet a fantastic atmosphere. Highly recommend!

Staying in South Melbourne

Neighbourhood Profile
South Melbourne
South Melbourne hosts the city’s oldest continuous market, founded in 1867. Rows of neatly arranged fruit, vegetables and flowers splash yellows, greens and reds along the entire perimeter, where the whole neighbourhood gathers for Saturday feasts. Inside the hall, shoppers hover over the mouth-watering displays of delicatessens and specialty food shops. Further in, a bazaar full of giftware, clothing, and kitchen utensils completes the scene. Take a break to walk the wide and shady streets and stroll along the Victorian-era heritage terrace houses. But return to the market in time for some paella, simmering in three large frypans on the footpath and served straight onto your plate.
