Very Scenic
Sep. 2019
We went out to Red Rock Coulee and hiked around for an hour or two, had lunch at their lake house, then headed up to some of the Elkwater view points.

Red Rock Coulee and Elkwater offer quite the contrast. Red Rock is considered to be badlands. It is very dry and has unique rock formations all over the place. My uncle knows a great deal about the rocks and land formations, so it was like a geology fieldtrip.

Unique and strange but lovely all the same

Giant fossilised button mushrooms? If my kids had been younger and with us their theory would definitely have been dinosaur poos!
Red rock coulee is fascinating. Getting up close and personal with geology is a favourite past time of mine and I've never seen anything quite like it. The area has an other worldly feel to it and a raw beauty.
Definitely worth a visit for a wander amongst these geological phenomena.

An amazing place for photography. Best time at sunrise or sunset at the golden hours for captures. If there was ever a Mars type of geographic features this is it. Be aware after a rain the area is very muddy and slippery!

Very scenic spot off the beaten track

Approximately 55 km south west of Medicine Hat one finds the scenic Red Rock Coulee. It is located about 25 km south of Seven Persons, just off of Highway 887. The park has excellent examples of sandstone concretions (rounded boulder like rocks) up to 2.5 metres in diameter. These concretions occur in the Late Cretaceous Bearspaw shale formation. From the park, one can see the igneous intrusive Sweet Grass Hills just over the Montana border to the south. It is a great place to see some of the wonderful scenery, vegetation and wildlife of southern Alberta. There are no facilities at the park. There may not be enough here to warrant a special trip from a long distance, but if one is anywhere in the area it is certainly a great place to see.

The rocks are so out of place, yet amazing. We took lots of photos on, under, next to the rocks. I could sit there and look at tje view for hours!

Off the beaten path

This is an interesting place to see the red rocks. There is a paved road half way then it is pure dirt road so drive according to weather it is easily accessible with a 30 ft rv so any cars and bigger can make it through. The area is nice and quiet and not many people visiting. Pay attention to signs to get here or you will end up driving too far out of the way. If you haven't seen this before it is worth a stop.

This was amazing

I finally got there. I have heard it is best at sunrise or sunset so that the light shines on the red rocks. but i got there when there was a storm coming in. (unfortunately that meant a lot of mosquitoes) but it was really worth it. Lots of different formations of rocks and all red. this is rattlesnake country so be wary...but the ambience is worth it

Amazing Place!

This was my first visit to Red Rock Coulee, and was not disappointed. Just a short drive from Medicine Hat, it provides the opportunity for short hikes in the valley to view and photograph the boulder shaped sandstone concretions. An amazing natural place, particularly at sunset.

But beware, mosquito spray is needed in the summer and the clay is amazingly slippery (and dangerous) during or after a rain.

My friend took my son and I out to visit the Red Rock Coulee area...it was beautiful. Not far outside Medicine Hat, felt like Inwas on Mars! I highly recommend checking it out. Not to be missed!

Incredible Stillness
Jul. 2015 • Family
Red Rock Coulee is one of those magical places. It is located just off of Highway 887 after a short drive up the hill. It is usually very quiet in regards to visitors. The quiet is astounding. When I visited in July I heard coyotes in the distance.

There is a very short walk down to the actual rocks. The rocks are amazing! They are so strange and look as though they should be on Mars. There are quite a few of them!

If you are looking for a peaceful escape among wonderful scenery this is the place to be!
