My wife and I wrapped up a three-week trip through Argentinian Patagonia and Torres del Paine with a week-long surf vacation in Pichilemu, Chile. While Patagonia was breathtaking, our time with Ismael was actually the most memorable part of the trip.

We had debated between going to larger surf camps that hosted multiple groups or opting for something more private and personalized. Ultimately, we chose Ismael’s experience, and it was the best decision we could’ve made—especially since we were total beginners with zero surfing experience.

Ismael gave us an incredible glimpse into life in Pichilemu. His passion for surfing, house-building, and his town’s culture was inspiring. He’s genuinely proud of his roots, and it showed in everything he shared with us. He even brought us into his family’s world, making us feel like we were part of the Chilean way of life for a week.

Every day had a perfect flow: sleep in, cook breakfast, surf, get treated to lunch, explore local sights, and then enjoy a relaxing evening with an amazing dinner and a stroll through the beautiful surf town. We even had days where we added in a stand up paddleboard session and spent all night celebrating New Years with Ismael. The surf house itself was incredible—floor-to-ceiling windows, plenty of natural light, and even a stocked fridge so we didn’t have to worry about grocery shopping.

And on top of all that, Ismael is just a fantastic person. He’s super personable and can literally talk to anyone, which made the experience even more fun and welcoming.

If you’re looking for a surf trip, especially one that’s private, tailored, and perfect for first-timers, I can’t recommend Ismael enough. It’s an experience you’ll never forget!

What can I say about this man, Ismael, what a guy and what a superb week I had in November with him!

He hosted me for most of the week in his log cabin that he built from scratch with his dog Lecce, I noticed on arrival that here there is no such thing as plaster and insulation. They use the old fashion plaster - mud! Amazingly, it was a very warm house.

I enjoyed our adventures, we explored the wine valleys of Chile and tasted some of the expensive wines of the region, surfed every day as he taught me the fundamentals of ocean surfing and educated me on the Chilean way of life.

Pichilemu and the people Ismael introduced me to have a different way of life than the ones I have met on my trip in Santiago. They are all about living their lives the best way possible. Currency is in favours in this part of the world and not nessessary money. In between surf trips Ismael would say 'before we go I have to drop off x', it may be compost, a drill bit, surfboard etc. Helping out your fellow neighbour in the town and somewhere down the line they will help you. He paid his mechanic a bottle of wine instead of currency to sort out an issue on his car. He spent most of the week apologising to everyone we met for not getting an invite to his wedding, a popular figure in the town.

As a surf teacher, you will learn the fundamentals of ocean surfing, he is very patient and helps you develop your skills whether you are a natural or a beginner. Ismael also has plenty of surfboards and wetsuits (which is needed in the Pacific Ocean) so all equipment is taken care of.

Evening time and going to a local bar where the price is much the same as the UK and this is a rural part of Chile, but the local was full until 3/4am with everyone enjoying themselves despite the price of the drink, the venue and the entertainment made the night.

I was amazed to hear though that no-one wants to leave the area, it is beautiful and the positive atmosphere of the region I could understand why. I felt as I left on the bus that I escaped a Lotus Garden of the world as I could have stayed for much longer. Pichilemu is very much like the Hotel California - 'you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.' And I am sure you will feel the same too.

Thank you Ismael and I hope we can meet again soon

Highly recommend, Ismael will not disappoint!

I spent one week with Ismael in October 2022 after booking him as a surf guide. I cannot speak highly enough of Ismael as both a person and a surf guide. I was slightly apprehensive having not surfed for a couple of years however my nerves quickly disappeared when I met Ismael. I wanted a hassle free trip which is what I got. Ismael picked me up from the airport (on time!). I also love playing golf and we were able to play on the way from the airport with his uncle and his uncle's friend, as well at at the end of the week when dropping me back at Santiago. It was a really good laugh and I was so glad we could play. He dropped me at my accommodation in Pichilemu and made sure I was sorted, and then we surfed Punta de Lobos for the entire week. Ismael gave me so much confidence on the paddle out at Punta de Lobos which is sketchy. Without him I would have got destroyed! The waves were great all week, but I never felt Ismael was judging my surfing which some other instructors with a "too cool for school" attitude can have. Given I am 44 years old I just wanted to have fun in the water which I was able to do, but I'm sure younger and more exitable surfers would be equally well catered for. I only wanted to surf in the mornings and Ismael always turned up on time with a good attitude, which again does not always happen with other surf guides I've had. I loved talking to Ismael about pretty much everything. He's very open and honest, and I learned a great deal about Chile both geographically and politically. Ismael took me to a local restaurant where we had a lovely cheap meal, and also took me to a lush Pizzaria one evening with him, his partner Victoria, and his brother. I could not have felt more at ease, and nothing was forced. If I just wanted to read my book on my own that was fine too, there was no need for me to feel like I had to live up to anything. All in all it was a really brilliant week. No hassles at all, excellent surf guiding and lovely company. I cannot recommend Ismael highly enough if you want an interesting experience with challenging and consistent waves. I am going back in december with my family and will not hesitate to book him again. I will aslo be asking him to guide me at the waves further south next year. If you book Ismael you will have a great experience, whatever your interests are. Thanks!!!

Myself, my sister and my niece chose the surf package and spent 5 days with Isamel. It was an absolutely amazing, real and authentic experience we will never forget. Isamel instantly felt like an old friend. He shared his knowledge about the geography, culture and history of Pichilemu, and took us on local tours of the area. A highlight was getting to see where they locally harvest salt. His passion for surfing is infectious, and I felt super safe and comfortable in the ocean while surfing. Isamel did such a good job at explaining everything before we got in the water, and I was able to push myself because I had complete trust in Ismael, and his experience as a teacher. On top of an incredible culture and surfing experience, the food was incredible. Ismael catered to all of our dietary needs and always packed us lots of snacks and fresh watermelon for surfing. I’m very grateful for our experience with Isamel, and I look forward to coming back in the future!

We had no idea what to expect arriving in Pichelumu for a girls surf trip and our experience completely surpassed anything we imagined. Ismael welcomed us and made us feel right at home. He’s a super knowledgeable and patient teacher and we felt safe and supported learning about surfing and the ocean. He guided us around the beautiful area and we were so grateful for such an authentic and fun experience. Ismael is an overall awesome human being, with a kind heart, and he will get you laughing and riding the wave of your life. We look forward to coming back! Highly recommend for a super fun and real time.

My boyfriend and I spent a week with Ismael, surfing and exploring the area around Punta de Lobos. We had so much fun and went to places we definitely wouldn't have gone to if it wasn't for Ismael. He is the perfect mix of kind, fun, funny and relaxed. Definitely would recommend a trip with Oceanos!

My time and instruction with Ismael Herreros, the owner and operator of Oceanos Chile, included some of the most incredible surf travel experiences of my life. Ismael doesn't just give surf lessons...he provides his students a premium package of Chilean cultural education, local water intelligence and safety, and top notch technique for both beginners and advanced surfers. Ismael uniquely embodies the surf and traveler spirit, and brings richness and passion into every single moment with his students - he's an absolute delight to be around! And, because Ismael is so connected to the local Pichilemu community, he can make recommendations for any traveler needs (food, art, wine, equipment, etc). Many thanks to Ismael for being such an incredible ambassador of Chilean stoke, and the Natural Surf Lodge for recommending him...I am returning from my vacation at another physical and mental level thanks to Ismael and Oceanos Chile!

Unique surf lessons where you not only learn how to surf, you learn to love what the ocean environment is all about....is a complete experience given by real professionals, not only surf professors and real surfers, also ecotourism professionals that show a profound love for what they do. Also the best ecotour company to discover the Pichilemu valley and their traditions!

Best Eco-tour experience I've ever had. A friend and I spent a few days in Pichilemu in November 2015 and it was hands-down the highlight of my trip to Chile. The natural beauty of this coastal area is not to be missed, and Oceano's style of custom eco-tourism brought us to the best aspects of the region in a casual, meaningful way. Initially looking for a surf lesson, we were introduced to Ismael by his brother who runs the Natural Surf Lodge (also excellent). Ismael took us to various viewpoints, explaining the forces of the ocean and earth that combine to create this world-class break, then took us for a lesson at Punta de Lobos that catered to our varied levels of skill. Even if you have never surfed before, Ismael's natural confidence and enthusiasm will help you feel very comfortable in the water.
The next day Ismael picked us up after a surf for an afternoon trip into the countryside. We visited a local artisan potter, a traditional sea-salt farming community, and two historical water driven flour mills. Ismael was greeted as a brother by locals young and old, who welcome him into their homes and businesses to share their stories with his guests. We sampled local cuisine and learned so much about the people that have made this region their home.
The day trip to Puertecillo was excellent. A breathtaking spot, surfed by locals for years, now under threat of development. Ismael promised waves and delivered, the four of us on the trip ranged in ability from complete beginner to advanced, and we all scored. Ismael set up a beautiful picnic on the beach, then we hiked out onto the headland where we stuck around til sunset to watch local crew surf the point as the swell increased into the evening. We ended the day with cold beers and abalone ceviche in a local pub.
The genuine warmth and hospitality offered to us by Ismael, his friends and his family was something I've rarely experienced elsewhere. I didn't want to leave, and I know I will return.
