We participated in a birding tour on the Tarcoles River! It was an Incredible experience. Our guide was Randall and we couldn't have been more pleased! We live in Costa Rica now and I will definitely be booking another tour with Mangrove Birding Journeys!

As our holiday drew to an unexpected end due coronovirus, we had one last trip out before a hasty retreat home. We hadn't planned to be in this part of Costa Rica but it was ideally placed to get to San Jose for a flight home. It was the perfect end to our trip. Keen on birds, we had been told that we might get to see a Roseate Spoonbill, which was high on our hit list. We met Randall at first light, and he took us on a magnificent tour of the mangroves. We saw lots of wildlife but no spoonbill. Then as our tour ended, we spotted one flying by. Although we were on our way back, Randall turned the boat round and took us to the spot where the spoonbill roosted. He didn't have to do that and we were so happy and grateful that he did. He is an excellent guide who goes above and beyond to ensure his clients are happy. I thoroughly recommend his tour.

My husband and I took a Tarcoles River boat tour with Randall in February. We saw many, many birds, crocodiles, lizards, etc. Randall is very knowledgeable and showed us many birds (particularly different parrot species) just on the walk to the boat! Once on the river we saw approx. 55 different kinds of birds. Binoculars are a great asset - especially if you are a birder. If you don't have any, Randall will provide you with some very good ones. Also, bring a camera! There will be many photo opportunities :-) Really fantastic morning! The tour lasts around 4 hours.

I'm not a birder, but my partner is. I was just tagging along. I love boat trips. It was absolutely beautiful. My partner was happy and I was happy. We saw lots of wildlife and Randall is really knowledgeable! This is not some tour from a hotel with a bored tour guide and stupidly feeding the crocodiles! If you care about the wildlife and the planet, book with this organisation.

We booked the morning mangrove tour with the aim of seeing several target birds and weren't disappointed. It was birds all around from the get go. There were only three people participating in the tour plus Randal (the guide) and Oscar (the captain). The boat is one of the typical ones you see on the Tarcoles River (two seaters one very side of the boat, about 20 rows). Tat meant plenty of space to walk around and get a good look at the birds. The boat also has a roof, so at most angles you re protected from the sun. We started of with some birding along the road to their property where the boat landing is. There were already a large number of parrots and parakeets there. Once on the boat we saw a large number of herons, terns (including Black Skimmer) and waders. Being on a boat allows you to get really close to the birds which isexcellent if you are into bird photography. We started off in the mangrove section where Randals and Oscars keen eyes soon yielded a lot of the specialty birds (Prothonotary Warbler, Mangrove Warbler, Panamanian Flycatcher, ...). They also know the sounds of every bird that lives in the mangrove and will do their best to call them in (Randal can imitate a lot of them). He didn't overdo it, so that any disturbance was reduced to the minimum. Very respectful of nature. After the mangrove section we headed up the main river to check a spot for Double-striped Thick-Knee and we weren't disappointed. Thanks to their excellent knowledge of the tides on the river, we were able to reach the spot at the right time. All in all I couldn't recommend this trip more. It delivers on all that is promised and more. Very much worth your while.
