Every time we come to Costa Rica we contact Randall to take us birding. He knows more about birds than anyone I have ever met. He is always informative, kind, and a delight to spend the day with. If you are a birder, you should definitely bird with Randall.

As a first visit to Costa Rica Randall's birding tour was a wonderful opportunity to see the country. He took us to 4 locations, giving us a chance to see different areas and the birds there. Randall is an excellent birder, focusing on getting his clients to see the best of birding in his country.

Our group included my parents with limited-mobility being in their late 60s, my 1 year old daughter, and myself. While Randall lives in Tarcoles, he will do tours anywhere in the country. Since we have been birding in CR before, Randall found the perfect location, El Copal Lodge, which allowed my parents to find many new birds without having to... More

We just returned from a tour booked with Randall Ortega Birding Journeys. It was fabulous!!! We were concerned when Randall was already booked but we spent the week with his assistant, Sergio Ulate, and he proved to be a veritable encyclopedia of bird knowledge. We never would have found or seen half of the birds without his experience with locations,... More

The Jungle Crocodile Safari was breathtaking. The Boat ride up the Tarcoles Rica cruise has clean rest rooms, local handicrafts, and knowledgeable river guides. We were given a bird Book as our boat left the dock and as we rode the river, our guide pointed out the beautiful birds along the banks , sharing space with the crocs. There was... More

I recently spent 3 weeks birding with Randall Ortega with a friend from Adelaide Australia. We are both experienced “hard core” birders. To say that Randall is a good bird guide would be a huge understatement. He is without doubt one of the very best bird guides I have ever encountered. His ability to see birds long before either of... More

I first read about Randall Ortega Chaves on Tripadvisor. When we stayed at Los Suenos Resort in Playa Herradura, I had no idea that he is the guide that Stay Costa Rica contracts with. I was so happy that it was he who showed up at our condo to take us (me and my spouse) birding for a half of... More

Many reviewers here and elsewhere have described Randall’s amazing performance as a birding/nature guide and we certainly agree. He is extraordinary in that regard. He helped us see more than a hundred species of birds in four days and he is even mentioned by the author of the leading book on Costa Rican birds in his list of acknowledgments. But... More

We spent 3 days birding with Randall Ortega Chavez on his Carara National Park birding tour (http://www.costaricabirdingjourneys.org) in December of 2012 and were thoroughly delighted with the experience. Birding with Randall is a real treat and great fun. He is an energetic, amazingly gifted birder with an uncanny ability to hear, identify and mimic bird sounds, as well as find... More
