While it's only 500 km's long, the Grass River was an important route for Aboriginals for hunting and trading, and later for the fur traders as well. It starts near Cranberry Portage, and ends in the Nelson River. We were driving through northern Manitoba recently and encountered it several times on this trip. When this river drops several metres at Pisew Falls, it's quite gorgeous, but you can see it in a few spots along Highways 10 and 39. We're don't canoe ourselves, but understand it's still one those classic routes. There are Aboriginal petrographs dating from 5000 years ago along the route.

We just finished paddling from Caribou Lodge at Cranberry Portage through First and Second Cranberry lakes. We had two local tourism water route maps. The lakes are gorgeous. Maps are okay. We started late on the first day and paddled 11kms just past where Second Cranberry begins. Strong winds from the north suggested we stop for the night on a great little island right there. Not a designated camp spot. More about that later. The second morning we paddled and paddled and loved it...checked out every bay and marsh at the far end of the lake. Some twice. Looked and looked for the mouth of Third Cranberry. You can't tell if you are paddling in to a long bay or the mouth of Third. The maps are not really detailed enough. We should have had a proper GPS. We just had a wrist Garmin to track distance and time. Never did find Third Cranberry, so headed for Simonhouse lake. Paddled 32 kms that day, and a total of 43 kms over two days. Only saw ONE designated spot at the mouth of Simonhouse. Great spot. How did we miss all those other sites?! Maybe not properly marked? Better maps would have helped. Still a great trip. We will do it again!

We've traveled from Cranberry Portage to Elbow Lake several times, always an interesting and beautiful trip. Fish at the Roblayton trestle, go to Hole-in-the-wall at Elbow Lake, camp on the islands along the way.

We did the shortish hike around Karst Spring on our exploration of Northern Manitoba, it is absolutely beautiful there, and the changes of landscape on the hike is amazing. Everyone really enjoyed it. It is not a difficult hike, but I wouldn't bring a toddler on it. The spring was neat. I'm sure there is lots of wildlife around although we didn't see any. There were bear droppings along the last part of the hike, but we aren't the quietest, so probably scared everything off.
The lake there seems nice, and there is a decent boat launch there. If I was younger, and in better shape, I would canoe the grass River systm. The scenery there is so beautiful. The wild lowers, trees, moss, everything just seems magical. I loved it there. A park pass is required there.

Literally right on the southern border of the rustic Canadian Shield this park offers excellent fishing, tremendous canoeing opportunities, great boating and camping. And.... no crowds.
