This is a hidden secret of Haiti. If you get to Port Salut for sure make time to explore these caves and the micro-habitat of forest vegetation at the site. Just a short hike from Port A Piment. Local guide will let you in and supply helmets and light but better still to bring your own good light. Guide Jean-Baptiste has a wealth of information.

I wasn't aware that Haiti had caves like this but here it is! This cave is huge and deep. You will get a tour guide along with the tour. Wear comfortable shoes because it's a nice hike to get there and the ground is rough. Bring water and sunscreen because it's hot.

I have visited Haiti with my Haitian friends but it was me who found out about the caves and suggested a visit. Drive through the countryside on the back of a pick up truck gives one an opportunity of many views of this beautiful place. Caves are located on the top of the hill, 10-20 easy walk, would not call it hike, was needed. Guides speak only French. No hard hats are needed and we were given headlights. Caves are amazing, climbing does require closed shoes as it is slippery inside. The tour was about 45 min long and we descended into a decent depth. I would definitely recommend seeing this place.

What an amazing adventure! There is so natural and untouched beauty at Les Grottes D’Haiti! If you are in the Les Cayes area it is worth the drive. The trip guide up the mountain and through the caves cost only about 15$ US for three people to tour. This includes hats and flashlights. Prepare with good shoes as you will hike up the mountain for 20 minutes first and then be climbing up rocks. The guide speaks French on this tour and is very knowledgeable. So worth the trip!!

Les Grottes D’Haiti or La Grotte Marie-Jeanne as it is called, is one of the most beautiful places of Haiti. They are located in Port au Piment, about 45 minutes from Port-Salut. It is a must see if you are visiting Port-Salut or Les Cayes (Okay). As mentioned, it will only take about 45 minutes from Port-Salut, the road is in great shape, as compared to other roads in Haiti. It is a wonderful ride along the southern coast. Once you reach Port au Piment, you will make a right on the first small street passing the cathedral, you will notice there is a green round about. After make another right, on the first street to reach the place where you will meet the guides and pay a small fee. You will probably see people on your left side under a tent, or on your right in an old school. If you get lost, just ask the locals, they will be able to assist you. I cannot recall the price for entrance, it was probably between 2-3 dollars (100 HTG) per person. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothes, we saw women bare foot because they were not able to walk in sandals. If you go, sandals are a big NO NO! prepare to hike up for about 10 minutes. Also be prepared to climb, slide, crawl, sit, jump and get dirty. It is a really fun adventure, and a nice work out if I may add. The caves are beyond magical and it is worth seeing. We stayed for about 2 hours, we had a wonderful and knowledgeable guide who took us deep in the caves, 3 to be exact. We were a small group and we truly learned a lot from the tour. Also, please make sure to let your guide know that you want to go deep in the caves. We encountered some people who were truly disappointed in the caves, but it was because their guide did not take them to all 3 different caves or because they didn’t reach far enough. Our guide was older and much more knowledgeable of the site. Pay attention to that. I recommend you visit the website if you need more information: http://www.grottesdhaiti.org/grotte-d-haiti.html. Have fun and enjoy!!!
