To see the crater I recommend leaving your car in the first car park you come across after paying (20 lei adults, 15 lei students). The crater is the result of volcanic activity that took place in the Eastern Carpathians 10,000 years ago.
Gorgeous colors ranging from red of various shades to lava black. The vegetation that has managed to develop inside the chasm leaves you amazed.
Then it is best to get back in the car and go to the other car park to see the emerald lake on the right and the basalt columns on the left. Alternatively you can park in the last car park and to reach the volcano take a nice walk around the lake for half an hour.
The 10-15 meter high basalt columns that formed a million years ago.
The turquoise lake instead was formed in a former basalt quarry.
To visit the entire complex calmly it takes about 1 and a half to 2 hours. In the last parking lot there are 2 chemical toilets, which however close at a certain time. At 6pm they were already closed.

Yes, there are no signs to lead you to the volcano and the other 2 wonders in the area (the basalt columns and the Emerald Lake).
Yes, there might be gypsy kids begging for money in the parking lot - which, indeed, is not a proper parking lot.
But, apart from these details, you'll get to see a former volcano - an arid area (ashes and clay) which is nevertheless extremely picturesque given the vegetation that has somehow found a way to grow. You can take your time and walk both inside and on the brim of the volcano. Most tourists take a few pictures and some selfies and leave, But there's so much to see.
From the hills surrounding the volcano you get superb views over the area and the village. You can easily have a small picnic there.

The inactive Racos volcano looks more like a canyon nowadays.
From distance it looks like a hill covered by vegetation but the slopes that go inside the former crater are covered in red sand and pebble. The striking contrast between the green vegetation and the red slopes is amazing.
We visited the site in March 2024 and were lucky to find the area open for tourists. Usually, the access to Racos volcano is restricted, as the area is used by movie producers to shoot various scenes involving men riding horses in a dramatic landscape.

It’s a nice place to visit for couples, families. We had a nice walk trough the basalt mine, the smaragd lake and near to the canyon. All this takes 2 hours, with great landscapes. We met a guide, she was nice and explained us a bit about the history of this mine and colcanic place.

Nobody I know had any knowledge about this amazing place. We almost did not walk to it because it only looked like a small rock. Little did we know we will end up to see such an impressive volcano, on romanian territory. Totally worth it. A few meters away you can see the Emerald Lake which is also amazing.

entrance ticket is 20 RON, and this allows you to visit 4 sites
3 within the geological complex
- Racos Volcano
- Emerald Lake
- Basalt Column
and 1 about 5 min drive away, the Sukosd-Bethlen Castle.
it will take a min of 2 hours to do all. i think the experience is fine, but can be skipped if there are higher priority activities

If you visit this area, you have 4 attractions: The Emerald Lake and The Basalt Columns, a few minutes drive from Racos. Then there is the Racos Volcano, very close to the lake and columns and then you should not miss the Sükösd-Bethlen Castle. Unfortunately, the "castle" has not been fully restaured but it is interesting to see, as it has been built in the 1600's.
