So many flowers and beautiful houses inside the Monastery. The museum has old items handcrafted by the nuns. Don't stay too much outside, many beggars. But really go and see the place

Varatec monastery - close to Targu Neamt - not as famous or touristic as the painted monasteries of Bucovina , and not as beautiful as Agapia (at Agapia in the mid 1800 Nicolae Grigorescu - the famous romanian painter did some of the decorations).
So , entrance is free of charge - the church itself was in a refurbishment process on the outside- so no pics - but you could enter and take pics - when we were there it was service in progress so we did not want to disturb. Beautiful courtyard - with the bronze statue of Safta Brancoveanu in the garden .
As you arrive a generous parking lot is there outside so you can park your car free of charge - make sure you stop by the small bakery shop that is run by the nuns, the products are really good . And since you are there you can take a short walk to visit the tomb of Veronica Micle - 5 min walk from the parking lot - she was the mistress of Mihai Eminescu.
Overall a very nice experience - I recommend you visit the place if you are in Tirgu Neamt area.

Our travel agent arranged an overnight stay for us during our trip in Romania. We found another touring Romanian family also staying overnight in another building there. Varatec is close to Agapia monastery, but bigger and houses 400 nuns. In the old days, Agapia was more famous. So I recommend visiting both monasteries when you are there.
While staying in the Varatec monastery, we could watch how the nuns live, listen to their praying and singing in the church or chapel, watch them do their knitting, and catch the distinctive sound of "wood striking with a hammer" to call to worship. As I understood, the wood striking was a tradition passed down to avoid attracting religious enemies if they rang the church bells. It was a very different experience staying as guests for one night.

The monastery of Varaic is located in the village of the same name, in Neamt County. Besides, the whole village is exclusively built for religious purposes. In the courtyard of another church, located 100 meters from the monastery, was the tomb of the poet Veronica Micle.
Access is easy by car, the road was recently modernized. There is no charge for parking or access to the monastery.

Varatec Monastery is a lovely place to take a quite and relaxing stroll around. This small complex is one I would recommend to anyone wanting to experience the north. Definitely worth a visit.

It was not quite as pretty as Agapaia, however it was very nice and quite tranquil. There did not seem to be access to the church. There did not seem to be any charge for the visit. There is a lovely garden shaded by cedar trees. The older nuns live in the pretty little cottages, many with lovely gardens.

The monastery was founded in 1785 by nun Olimpiada, with her confessor, Father Iosif. It is the largest nun monastery in Romania, with more than 400 nuns living here. Massive stone walls enclose the main church, The Dormition of the Virgin Mary, the monastic precinct is surrounded by the monastery village, made up of rural traditional houses, where the nuns live, and which lie along narrow alleys. The Church "Dormition of the Virgin Mary" was built during 1808-1812, and consecrated in 1812. A bronze statue of Safta Brâncoveanu, made by sculptor Ion Jalea was placed in 1935, close to the eastern apse of the "Dormition of the Virgin Mary" Church.

Varatec Monastery is a must in a tour of monasteries. First of all, the road toward the monastery is very special. The monastery itself is not better, not worst than others but gives you a very good feeling. Is clean and organised and very friendly. Very beautiful and pitoresque is the village of nones around the monastery. It worths to take a walk around. And, more over, there are a lot of culture tracks there.Just go and discover them!

We were a group of four and we were fortunate enough to have arranged for an overnight stay within the monastery ground by Axa Travel. Varatec is the largest monastery in Europe and there are four hundred nuns who live in houses around the monastery complex. A walk around the monastery "village" would shed some light on the daily lives of the nuns. Well tended flower beds and window boxes, fields of vegetables patches, needle works on drying lines revealed the daily chores of the nuns.

The main church was under refurbishment during our visit and a small house beside the church was allocated for prayer. This happened just next to our dormitory and we could listen to their prayers from morning till night. A barely audible chant which calmed and cleansed your souls.

The rooms inside the monastery with en suite bathroom were basic but comfortable. We also managed to have delicious home cooked dinner and breakfast inside the monastery. Dinner was vegetarian due to the fasting habit every Wednesday, these included several different dishes of vegetables and pasta. Breakfast was more variable with fish fillets, fresh milk and cheese from the monastery farm.

Many visitors claimed that the Varatec was not the best monastery around the area. But to us, an overnight stay at the largest monastery complex in Europe was definitely an exceptional experience.
