Really really enjoyed this walk on a level track with only some rocks to negotiate towards the end. The beech forest is so lovely and the hole, although there is not really so much to see, is amazing nevertheless. The drive in was tricky, but fun to drive! It was a nice picnic spot too.

The drive in is well worth it. This is a great walk through beech forest and fantastic rock formations. Our teenage daughters who weren't that interested beforehand absolutely loved it and were pleased we made them do it too!

I thoroughly enjoyed the walk in, my first in a beech forrest. Was beautiful and very peaceful. Very easy walk for 20 - 30 minutes until you hit a rocky area about 15 minutes from the end. I am not very sure footed so slowed down and was a bit slow over the rocks. Pretty scenery and lots of birdsong.... More

This is an amazing piece of geography. The walk to Harwood's Hole is through a birch wood forest which on the day we went was so still and quiet it feels like something out of a fantasy novel. The hole itself is huge, almost beyond belief. To get a good view you do have to climb a few rocks, which... More

On top of the Takaka Hill in an area called "Canaan Downs" is the geological feature "Harwood's Hole" the largest sink hole in the Southern Hemisphere. Firstly you must travel off the main road down Canaan Road for 11km which is a narrow windy farm track and would almost be a 4wd track, but careful driving got us through with... More

The value of this walk needs to be balanced against the 11km goat track drive to get to it. Until the last ten minutes to either the lookout or the hole itself the track is generally smooth and easy going but not stunningly scenic - fairly ordinary beech forest with occasional limestone outcrops. Last ten minutes is rougher and more... More

Take the long hravel road to the carpark, do the walk through the stunning forest, hang around the hole and the 2 lookouts overseeing the upper Takaka area and then: have a coffee or a real fruit ice cream at the Woolshed cafe back at the main road.

We were on a relaxing day trip from Kaiteriteri to Takaka when we came across the road sign for Harwoods Hole Walk 11 km off Highway on dusty unsealed road. But it was well worth it. Parked the car in the shade and set off on the 45 min easy walk through wonderful beech forest with glimpses of blue sky... More

Loved the drive in to the walk, spectacular bush not a walk for the unfit or elderly but well worth it to look down that deep hole which I found very scary indeed

This hike is wonderful! The drive about 1.5 hours from Nelson City center and well worth it. The google map link on here took us to 93 wharf road but there was still 40 minutes drive that remained. Make sure to take SH 60 all the way up the mountain and you will come to a company that does cave... More
