From the friendliest of welcomes to an hr of perfect peace, this was one of the highlights of the week. A car park at the rear with a short walk and a few stairs to access the ticket office, the ante rooms all have a step but other areas have easy access. A fabulous history including the invention of modern... More

An abbey with a chequered past. It's a place of preserved simplicity and in parts quite beautiful. The church is still in use. I suspect some more restoration funds would bring this visitor experience on considerably. Worth the visit. Thank you.

A beautiful place to visit and very peaceful. The lady on duty when we went was so keen on both French and English to explain all the must see spots in the Abbaye it was delightful and made us feel welcome in this Charming place

I really loved this old monastery which is truly steeped in history. The welcome is warm and, as there are not loads of visitors, the ladies at the welcome desk set you off on you visit with your own personal intro to the site. The cloister is beautiful and so tranquil. The church contains a carving by the so called... More

For a small abbey in a little village St. Hilaire holds some amazing surprises including the work of the medieval Maitre de Cabestany, the fine stone engraving of the St Sernin torture at the hands of the Romans, the painted ceiling with its scenes of medieval life, monsters and fantasies. The courtyard is lovely with its fountain and simplicity. The... More

This is a must-see place if you're staying in the area. Even though I'd seen photos, my first response to walking into the cloisters was to say "Wow!" It's very peaceful and is open all day which is helpful if you're unused to the 2 hour lunchtime shutdown that happens in many places. We spent about 45 minutes wandering around... More

How could you not want to visit the home of fizz? Lovely, well preserved abbey on a site dating back to Roman times that is famous for inventing fizzy wine (100 years before becoming prevalent in Champagne). It is said that Don Perignon visited the abbey on a pilgrimage to Spain and learned the technique from the Saint Hilaire monks.... More

Visited with children July 2016. Interesting Abbey with fascinating history. Reasonable entrance fee. We loved the calm and peace of the place and the little church was lovely. Very interesting pictures in the abbot's room! Staff were helpful and outlined the main things to look out for on the way round. It's not a big place and our visit took... More

The renovation works are ongoing and what has been done seems to be of high standard. There is plenty to see and the cloister area in particular is very calm and restful

Thankfully we arrived before the crowds and enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the place especially the Cloitres. It is steeped in history, which I won't bore you with. Go and enjoy it first hand. The information is in English and the staff speak English if needed.
