Hello, I want to talk to you about my experience of living in Cayambe. I have lived in Cayambe since I can remember, this small town saw me grow up. Cayambe is a very magical place, full of places to visit and traditional and delicious food. Cayambe's weather is very crazy, there are days when the sun is very hot, others when the cold makes you freeze, and others when the wind is so strong that you feel it can take you. In my opinion I prefer cold weather, it is much more pleasant.
Cayambe is the place of the Bizcochos and the Queso de hoja, throughout the town of Cayamabe you can find some restaurants that have Quesos de hoja and Bizcochos, it is a traditional dish of Cayambe. Many tourists come to Cayambe to try the Queso de hoja and Bizcochos, some people also take them abroad. The best known place where tourists go to eat bizcochos is the Bizcochos del Padre restaurant.
Cayambe also has some places that you can visit for example: monument to the middle of the world, the Cariacu waterfalls, the snowy Cayambe, the Puntiatzil architectural complex, Municipal Museum, Molios ta Onio railway bridge.
Cayambe also has many parks that you can go to, it also has rivers, another known place is also the house of Mariana de Jesus, a very beloved saint in the country. There are also many pools, one that I know is on the bank of a river.
Of the places that I have visited in Cayambe, the Cariacu waterfalls are my favorite places, these waterfalls are very large, they are in a community called Cariacu, to get to these waterfalls you have to walk a lot. The first time I went to these waterfalls, I was a girl and the road was not pretty, because it was in poor condition, years after I went again, the road was already more arranged and with signs so that you can get there. The people of the community are in charge of taking care of the waterfalls, and the people should not damage or dirty the waterfalls
I have not been able to go to the snowy Cayambe, but in the photos I have seen, it is a very magical and beautiful place, with a beautiful view. In order for you to get to the snowy, you must be accompanied by someone who knows the way because you can get lost.
Living in Cayambe has been a beautiful experience, the food and all the places it has for you to have fun. If you ever come to Ecuador, I recommend that you visit Cayambe in the province of Pichincha. Cayambe is near to the capital of Ecuador. I hope you visit some Cayambe and visit the Cariacu Waterfalls and eat the delicious Quesos de hoja and the Bizcochos.

It was a very nice experience, I went with my cousins to see this beautiful nature like the Cayambe Volcano. which the van takes us to a parking lot
and we climbed to the foot of the volcano where you can live the experience of touching and playing with the snow, always with great caution and with appropriate clothing for the occasion, since today it was very cold but it was accessible, since that experience is unforgettable and cannot be . You can't waste even a minute being there.

This is as good scenery as you'll see anywhere, beautiful mountains dominated by the beautiful snow-topped Cayambe Volcano. Definitely worth taking in on your Ecuadorian Andes trip.

Cayambe-Coca National Park is the largest national park in Ecuador, extending all the way to the Amazon basin, where a highlight of our recent visit to Cayambe was our trip to the base of Cayambe Volcano. The trip from Cayambe to Cayambe-Coca National Park is an adventure in itself, steadily gaining in elevation as you progress from cobblestones and haciendas to the park entrance, treeline, and a single-lane gravel road that is characterized by steep drop-offs to one side and muddy ruts up to 2 feet in depth. Let me point out that you should NOT, under any circumstances, attempt to drive up the park road in your own vehicle, even it it is a conventional all-wheel drive vehicle.
Where the road has cut into the adjacent rock and soil, layers of ash that have been deposited by volcanic eruptions are clearly evident. Along the way, we encountered waterfalls, alpine bogs and wildflowers growing in defiance of an intolerable environment. And, yes, we encountered snowfall at the earth’s equator!
We were very fortunate to have St. Louis native David Meyer as our guide to Cayambe Volcano. David was hired on our behalf by Jaime Pallares, the manager of Molino San Juan, where we were staying in Cayambe. Jaime wanted to be sure that we had the best guide possible, and David was the answer. As a native of the United States, David was fluent in English and the source of a tremendous amount of information about both the local population but Ecuador in general. In addition to recently beginning his services as a local tour guide, David is without doubt the most accomplished photographer of the Cayambe Volcano and has worked for the past 12 years as a missionary based in Ecuador with Crossworld ministries. He is an all-around good person whom we could not more highly recommend.
Cayambe Volcano is the only place on Earth that is located on the Equator and gets snow. When we arrived, the summit was obscured by clouds, but the clouds suddenly cleared and a rainbow was added to our unwordly view of the third highest mountain in Ecuador, all volcanoes. As the skies cleared even further, we hiked along the ridge line, where we were able to get a view of Antisana Volcano (the fourth highest in Ecuador) in the distance, looking toward the Amazon basin.

Hopefully no one will try this without proper equipment and proper guides. With both of those in place, the route is fine. An initial rock scramble takes you from the refugio to the edge of the glacier. You need to be there by midnight to limit the risk from avalanche and rock fall on your way down. Strong winds and driving snow stopped us at 17,500 but the trip was a good challenge.

The mountain is beautiful with gorgeous glaciers at the top. The elevation gain does make the air thinner up there but on a clear day it is incredible. Beware of the insane road because I was terrified as my husband drove. Definitely an adventure!

Don’t go to cayambe (town) to get to the mountain. The roads on the west side are impassable. Take the southeast highway from Quito. Lots of bears in the area as well. I recommend using a guide.

Though this is just a little shy of 19,000 feet it is a very doable climb. You can hike to around 17,000 feet before needing the crampons. Due to fresh snow then warm temperatures my guide felt there was a significant avalanche threat, so I didn't get to the top. It's a long drive to the refugio at the base of the volcano. To actually get to the refugio you need a 4 wheel drive with good ground clearance and tires. Even then it is tough going for the vehicle. The refugio is at about 15,000 feet and you can stay in the barrack style rooms and they serve breakfast. A worthwhile experience.

Attempted climb with AndeanFace expeditions in February 2017. Slept night in Refugio (fantastically nice for a Refugio) and began climb around midnight. Met with avalanche conditions around 5200 meters and had to turn back. Beautiful mountain.

The visit to this beautiful place was very pleasant as on the way to Cayambe Volcano is full of surprises, the view is beautiful and you can find a variety of animals can be found in the place, as well as the landscape changes from one moment to the next, a landscape full of green vegetation, we turn to one with large grasslands that stretch as far as the eye can see. The Cayambe is frequently visited by national and foreign tourists, this is due to its great beauty and majesty. The last time I visited this wonderful place was with my family already four months ago, the access routes to this place are not so good because at a certain point in the path the road is only ballast which is full of potholes, this makes the arrival to the Nevado. It is recommended that the car is four by four otherwise it will be very difficult to reach. Once you arrive at the foot of the volcano walk fifteen minutes less to reach the refuge Ruales Oleas Berge. Persons who wish to come to the summit remain in place until the middle of the night, which is usually the time of departure of ascent. Note that the presence of an experienced guide is essential to go to this beautiful place.
Also remember that the first shelter has a capacity for fourty people, the value per night is $12.20 for nationals and to foreigners $24.40 the site features a kitchen and it is recommended to bring canned food, soups in on and water bottles.
So don't forget to go by this beautiful country that is Ecuador has many wonders of the world in one country.

Hola. Tenemos un auto común. Quisera saber si se puede dejar en algún lugar seguro para subir caminando al refugio, y si se puede pernoctar allí, y que servicios ofrece. Gracias!

I'm looking at hiking Cayambe and would very much appreciate recommendations for (1) guides and (2) time of year suggestions. On the latter: am I crazy to try to do this in May? Worried about weather.

Hi! How do I get to the Cayambe rifugio? Are there collectivos or taxi rides in a 4wd or do I really have to rent a car to get up there?
