Favourite spot on the West Coast
Jul. 2020
I had talked my sisters into a sundowner at Okarito, a turn off often passed by, but such a beautiful spot. The lagoon is a wonderful place, settled in pristine bushland and with views from the sea to the mountains which were snow capped while we were there. Reflections, a resident comarant, the information in the building on the edge of the lagoon make this a really worthwhile stop.

Allow enough time to d the trig walk up to 3 hours, but a stopover is just as good especially at sunset.

You will be entertained by the signs on the road indicating Kiwis live here - and they mean the real thing!! Its not far from Franz Josef.

A unique spot
Jun. 2020
Large, relatively undisturbed wetlands with magnificent sea and alpine views, full of birdlife. For the energetic it's close to some real altitude (e.g. at Franz Joseph), a wild coast and interesting bush.

Enjoy the quiet
Feb. 2020 • Couples
Okarito is a lovely body of water in the sparsely populated village of Okarito. You may swim, kayak or take another type of water excursion. There is a variety of birdlife and the trees and ferns surrounding the lagoon make for a beautiful shoreline. If you swim there are jelly fish, I saw three in the part of lagoon by the wharf.

Beautiful natural area
Nov. 2019
The lagoon is a habitat for many native birds including the White heron/kōtuku. There is a breeding colony close by and the adults visit this area for food for young. Other native birds can be found in the area include fernbirds, paradise ducks, banded dotterills on the beach along with lots of tuis.
Accommodation I used was through the Okarito Boat Tours, as the name suggests they also do tours on the lagoon in a flat bottomed boat. There is a variety of sizes available
My visit was part of a photography group. Great place for sunsets over sea reflected back on mountains. Board walk at start of track could be used by wheelchair

A tranquil special place
Jun. 2019 • Couples
We visited the lagoon on a crisp but sunny day and discovered why this is such a special place for Coasters. The lagoon is one of the beautiful places on the coast. The beach is a great place to wander along and there are many other lovely walks. It is well worth spending some time looking through the historic wharf building and learn about the history of the area.

Independent kayak tour of Okarito lagoon - about 4 hours duration

Weather conditions for us were excellent & we saw a number of Kotuku, some very close, but visitors must be quiet and remain aware of their surroundings if they are to see these elusive birds

Stunning, even in the rain.

We pre booked for a cruise of the lagoon with Okarito Eco Boat Tours but were a bit downhearted to find the morning misty and with squally showers. Now that we had paid we may as well grin and bear it. Needless to say we were the only tow, apart from the guide, in the open boat. As we were taken across the lagoon our guide gave us a history of the area, it's size and it's diversity. The lagoon is home to the great white heron among others and even in these poor weather conditions we were able to see them feeding on the mud flats. Other species seen included royal spoonbill, Caspian tern and pied stilt. The weather did clear up during our return to the moorings so all in all the two hour cruise was not a total washout.

Yet another great stop on our fantastic journey. Very sleepy little village. Special views. Go for a quick walk on the beach and feel the charm of the area
