El Carmen and the Ballumbrosio family provided a much needed break from Lima. They are a proud family and we're glad to demonstrate their very unique art forms-- of rich historical value. I would recommend calling/email/fb msg prior to visit.

To get the most from El Carmen, it's all about your guides. We came with 12 members of our dance company, on a tour of Peru to film dance documentary. If we had just driven into town, gotten out, walked around, and that was it,...More

I loved this little town. The food at Afrika in the plaza was very yummy and the people are so lovely. Was great to experience Afro-Peruvian zapatoes at Guillermo Santa Cruzs house. We stayed for about 3 hours chatting to him, learning the areas history...More

I was so looking forward to visiting el Carmen but bitterly disappointed. Murals on the main road look inviting but when you get there there is nothing more than a cute sleepy and quiet plaza and church. We asked some locals for advice but they...More

El Carmen is worth visiting because it is the center of Zapateo, an Afro-Andino music-dance genre. This is cotton and sugar cane country, so the "hacienda" plantations imported lots of African slaves, who were of course treated brutally. Among other things, drums were banned. Zapateo...More

On the way from Paracas to Lima, this place is totally different from the rest of Peru, with Afro-Peruvian culture. Nice square , relax atmosphere, best food at Afrika Restaurant on the square, gentle people. Do not miss if you are in the area.

You have to try sopa seca y mancha pecho the principal dish of the local cuisine. The typical restaurants are country type but very nice.

I headed to El Carmen (with a combi, not a taxi, from Chincha Alta - simply S/6 or less) with no plans, but simply the intention to understand the Afro - Peruvian culture, much of which - music, dance, and food is hardly catalogued online...More
