About
The J.A. Vachon House, located in Sainte-Marie de Beauce, less than 20 minutes from the Quebec bridges on Route 73 South, is the ancestral home of Vachon snack cakes. Accompanied by a tour guide, you will learn how this resourceful family from a modest background worked hard so their company would prosper. A visit to the residence, classified as a historic monument, will take you back to the time when Rose-Anna would make her goodies on the wood stove. You will also discover her first recipe book - the very one she used to record the recipes for her snack cakes as she created them. You will also learn how Rose-Anna did her bookkeeping to keep track of how much it cost to keep their modest business running. The tour finishes with a video on the history and production of the snack cakes at the factory, and, of course, two snack cakes per visitor. May to September, every day: 9h to 16h. October: Monday to Friday from 9h to 16h. The rest of the year: by reservation only, Monday to Friday
Duration: 1-2 hours

One would think that with all the cakes they sell (they make about one million a day in their local factory) that they could afford free tours. But no. It's $8 for adults which includes free cake. We decided we had already visited too many historical houses. Too bad. It could have been fun.

If you have not heard of Vachon snack cakes, perhaps you have heard its American version "Hostess" as in Hostess Twinkies. This old, two-storey house showcases the beginnings of the Vachon (Hostess) snack cake industry which is still run out of Sainte-Marie, though its customers are international.

The guided tour is roughly one hour long, including the 15 minute video (of the company's history, as well as how the cakes are made). The tours, the museum item descriptions and the video are available equally in French or English. My friendly tour guide was able to answer all my questions. Even if you are not a snack cake lover, there were interesting things to see and learn. For example, the world's oldest wedding cake (Guinness Book of World Records) can be seen, as well as the story behind it. The tour ends with a chance for each visitor to choose two wrapped Vachon snack cakes. I was able to go back and look around the museum afterwards on my own. There is a small boutique to buy local products as souvenirs, such as maple syrup.

Worth the visit.

Ideal activity for lovers of Vachons Ptits Gâteaux! Or even for those who want to learn more about a local company that has made the region shine. Inside the house, you will discover several interesting facts about the Vachon family and their business in addition to discovering an impressive collection of period objects that were used to make the famous desserts. Maison J-A Vachon is one of the 12 places on the Miracle of the Beauce Tourist Route. The departure of the Mariverain walker, a small train allowing you to take a historical tour in the city center of Sainte-Marie, is also at the Maison J-A Vachon. It is possible to visit the Maison J-A Vachon as a package with the Aviation Museum and the Mariverain walker, it takes up a day! Please note that reservations are required to participate in the visits. Open to visits in summer only.
