What travellers are saying
- Shlomi TNagano, Japan1,414 contributionsExcellent museum on a different level. Full of treasures.
Must have cost them a fortune to build. And to fill it with all those treasures from around the world. It is amazing to understand more about this group of secretive and highly-skilled covert agent, and how science and psychology were put into the design of the traps and hidden places.
However, the place is very far away from the train station and visitors need to walk through a field to get to the house. Furthermore, there is no other tourist attractions nearby. It may not worth the visit for visitors who do not have much time in Japan.Written October 18, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The weather on the day we visited was good and there were some families having picnics and playing on the (patchy) grass. One building houses the residency programme and can only be visited by arrangement. Another building is the Shigaraki Craft Exhibition Pavilion which has a exhibition of artists' pots, a cafe, and the highlight, the shop, which has a good selection of local products and produce such as tea, sake, senbei, as well as local crafts - well worth visiting. At the top of the site, at the top of lots of steps, there is a fee-charging museum which has changing exhibitions through the year. The map showed hiking trails starting up there, but we found they were roped off and not open.
The entire site is also an open air sculpture park - with a small number of notable exceptions, most of the works were not of a good standard, and needed curating. I felt the entire site was a bit run down.Written June 1, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This line, commencing at Shigaraki and ending at Kibukawa, is a great way to spend an hour-or-two of your time. The trains are very quaint. The scenery along the route is typical Japanese rural at it's very best. Place this activity on your 'must do' list when in Shigaraki. The fare is only 460-yen.Written May 21, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Anne HYpsilanti, MI5 contributionsThe 25- or 30-year-old buildings and equipment are showing their age, and in need of maintenance in some cases, but our family of 4 had great fun climbing walls, skimming across the muddy pond, throwing shuriken, and sneaking through secret passages. It's in the middle of nowhere, but the free shuttle to the train station really helped!Written April 1, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
