A day to rememberWritten February 2, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Is not suitable for children or people with fear of highs or darkness. End of the trail was a bit disappointing but maybe it makes better impression when is rainy seasonWritten May 6, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - RoverPInverness, UK710 contributionsThis is a small church in a very small community but it is beautiful inside and out. Really quite a surprise. If you are in the area it is well worth making a point of seeing this. Interesting cemetry next to it too.Written November 10, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Laurella WalkerWinchester, UK1,390 contributionsWe have climbed up to the chapel before but decided to go again as it’s such great views. A gorgeous little chapel, absolutely amazing views, w fair few steps but you can go at your own pace and they are safe steps and not uneven.Written October 8, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Victoria P39 contributionsIt really isn't much but a few benches under some trees. So quite nice to find on a sunny day. We did see our first lizard here though.Written July 31, 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- David DDevon, UK20,544 contributionsSunday 10th September and we visited the village of Sao Vincente on the Northwest coast of the Island.
Across the mouth of the River, this bridge spans it in two sections with a central support platform. As well as connecting both side of the bridge, the platform is also home to the small Sao Vincente Chapel, set in to the rocks.
The bridge is located along ER101 Avenida Marcos Marques Rosa.Traffic crosses the Bridge, single lane in both directions. Each side of both sections of the Bridge is lined with a blue painted metal arched structure, liked by an overhead beam.
The bridge links Sao Vincente to Ponta Delgada and beyond to the eastern side of the Island in one direction and Porto Moniz in the other.Written September 22, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We parked up in a car park by the River and near the seafront.
Located in a grassy area nearby the wooden footbridge across the River and the car park are these mushroom shaped structures. There is roughly a dozen of them in all shapes and sizes.
They appear to be like rocks/boulders standing on wooden posts, which we assumed were meant to resemble mushrooms. There was no information board around to give an explanation.
Subsequent to the visit we were unable to discover any information, so they remain known as the Sao Vincente Mushrooms.
They are nothing special but worth a quick look if in the vicinity.Written September 23, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Having parked up we took a walk about, we walked along the seafront Promenade, Avineda Marcos Marques Rosa which runs along the back of this beach.
This a narrow stretch of stoney and pebbled beach, rather typical of Madeiran beaches. It is flanked at both ends by rather dramatic cliffs. It was all enhanced by the deep blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the white surf washing over the pebbles.
At the time of our visit there was nothing on the beach, no sunbeds, umbrellas or any other facilities for visitors.
In one direction there were views along the coast as far as Ponta do Poisa while the Sao Vincente Bridge was in the other.
At the end of the promenade we crossed over to the other side of the road and walked back to our car. This side of the road was more interesting than the beach side. It was lined with shops, bars, restaurants and other oddities.Written November 11, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We parked up in the parking area near the River and the Mushroom Statues. From there we walked the short distance to the seafront.
This small Chapel, set into the rocks, stands on a small island/platform, at the centre of the mouth of the River. The island as well being the home to the Chapel it is the central support of the bridge that spans the River.
Although the Chapel was closed when we were here, it was possible to look inside through the glass panels in the door, although they were a bit dusty. Inside we were able to see the small shrine consisting of three small statues surrounded by flowers and plants.
Set on the top of the rocks is a small cross with the year 1905 carved into it. Nearby there is a small plaque with an inscription, the Chapel was restored and then inaugurated on the 22nd January 2020.
