On the morning we were scheduled to visit the Sumidero Canyon, Lucero, the administrator of Cepsu called to advise the tour had been cancelled due to bad weather. She quickly rearranged our day to visit 2 indigenous communities, and our family of 4 ended up having a private tour. Our tour guide, Nahum, was professional, courteous, knowledgeable and very pleasant to spend the day with. He gave us a lot f information about the two communities we visited. We had an extremely interesting day, despite the bad weather.
I highly recommend this tour company. They are professional and a pleasure to deal with. Our trip to Chiapas was made all the more enjoyable thanks to them.

While the town is very nice and well organized downtown, the most fascinating is the growth of authority for the Mayans. While most cities in the Yucatan are run by a few Spanish and many mestizos, some of the cities in Chiapas have growing power and authority by Mayans. The nearby Indigenous Villages are entirely run by Mayans under their traditional practices from the post-900 A.D. years after the royalty was overthrown. Several former Catholic churches are now run by the Mayans with a blend of Mayan and Christianity. Lovely weaving and other skills are now made and sold to visitors and create a money basis to strengthen the trading systems in the mixed stores. My experience in mestizo areas was mostly without much smiling by the Indigenous people but they were open and frequent in the exclusive Chiapas Mayan cities. Their towns expect visitor courtesy and the following of their reasonable rules. Remembering it is their town made us greatly enjoy another culture.

This is a truly great experience. I did the half day to a waterfall. The scenery was beautiful and the ride was a lot of fun. This is a must do experience. The guide Alli was very friendly and helpful.

The guide was about 30 minutes late picking me up (no biggie).

It was nice to have an English speaking guide, but he was "just barely" english.

I was fine with the stuff he taught me but I missed a few things, but caught enough to understand and Google the history when I got home.

I don't mean anything above to be negative. There is a difference between being conversational in a language and being able to describe 500 years of history. The guide did a very good job, but just letting people know he wasn't 100% fluent in English.

And just saying, I know I'm in a non-English country but I took the English tour.

I stayed in San Cris for 3 months and went on pretty much all the tours available and this was the only tour that (for me) an English guide was available and NEEDED.

The other tours in town you don't need to speak the language to see cool stuff, but this one it's important and you need a guide.

Also..the church I saw in town was a cool experience. I took a shot of Pox as the sacrament, but be warned...you might see a chicken killed as part of a religious ceremony. I didn't like it and cringed a little but it is what is. No blood, they just broke it's neck.

I have to say, this was the most meaningful experience of my trip so far. I have been travelling alone for 5 months and this was a perfect example of what I have been looking for, to witness indigenous culture, traditional celebration and raw spiritual moments.

Rudy is such a genuine person who knows when to inform you - he kindly translated in English for me - and when to let you have your own experience. He knows what his guests will appreciate the most. We as a group bonded I think because Rudy effortlessly makes it so personal. We had so many magical moments in the day it was very moving to experience. This tour encapsulates the authentic travel experience which transcends 'things to tick off the list!'

Honestly, I think this will be the most memorable moment I will treasure as a solo traveller. He is a kind and knowledgeable person. I feel so lucky I got to experience this day. It was the perfect day! Gracias 🙏

Had an excellent experience on the textiles and mysticism tour with Rudy. He was very knowledgeable about the history and practices of the indigenous people of Chiapas, we learned a lot! Seeing the rituals performed in the church of Chamula was my favorite part. He even took us to a local cantina restaurant once we got back to San Cristobal. The restaurant manager was so happy to have tourists in his restaurant they brought us a round of Mezcalinas! 🍹

I recently returned from a week at a Spanish Language school in this town near the Guatemalan border. I stayed in the private house of a woman recommended by the school, Instituto Jovel, which I also recommend. Flory Burguete owns a four bedroom home in the middle of town, about a three block walk from the school. You do not need to be attending the school to stay with her. You can book directly through her. You can pay her to prepare meals if you wish. I did and was very happy with her cooking. She intentionally prepares meals well known in the area. She does not speak English but is very quick with her translation app. She is a delightful, helpful woman and added so much to my time in San CristĂłbal. The home itself is authentically local, has two separate toilets and a separate shower. The yard is a lovely garden. The altitude in the city is 7,000 feet so the temperature is usually cool. If you're going to that area, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a stay with her. Cell: +52 967 169-1002.

I liked this tour very much. I used a different tour group for a similar tour last year, but this company had more interesting stops and a bi-lingual guide, who painstakingly gave us his talk in English and Spanish while clearly not feeling well. (Thank you Alfonso.) I especially enjoyed the two churches in Zinacantán and again, the interesting sights in the San Juan Chamula church. We took a different routes to and from San Cristóbal and I would have loved to see the scenery both coming and going, but the tour van windows were so darkly tinted, that nothing but shadows could be seen through to the outside. It was quite unfortunate, as I look forward to the scenery to and from a destination as much as the destination itself. But the only view to the outside that could be seen was through the front windshield, past the heads and seats of people in front of us. Had the scenery been viewable, I would have rated this tour a “5”.

A visit to Zinacantan resulted in only a visit to a single store selling local textiles. The town itself appeared ordinary.

Chamula has lost charm and character and the visit only included a walk along an uninteresting street and a visit to the church where shamanic practices include the sac drive of chickens and roosters.
