We walked 1.8 km down from our Orizontes Hotel to see the port & visit this technical museum. It is one of three developed by Kostas Kotsanas with 22 years of research into the Greek contribution to scientific inventions. Its 300 models with detailed descriptions are overwhelming and could be used for a college course into Astronomy, Military, Medical, Textile, Musical, etc. My interest today focused on the cutting, moving and lifting of the sculpted stonework to build all their temples; strong rope, pulleys, winches, levers, cranes and the detailed scaffolds. Also noted the olive presses, grinding mills and water hydraulic mechanisms.
They provide “hands on” models which school kids were loving today.

Katakolon is a shore side village in western Ilia that overlooks the Ionian Sea. We arrived by ship for the day and we were the only ship in the harbor. It’s a small village, literally on a few blocks wide and long. Everything is in easy to walking distance from the ship.

The harbor has little fishing boats and men mending the nets. The streets are dotted with small shops, lovely bars, and family run restaurants. The shops are mainly arts and crafts, pottery and jewelry some nice boutiques.

Located just outside the cruise port, 5 minute walk. So it is ideal if you visit Katakolo on a cruise and do not want to go on a tour. Nice and clean, rather small beach. Sun beds for rent at 5 euro each, no time limit and including umbrella. Small bar with cold and hot drinks and some food - very reasonable prices. Shower, toilet and changing cabin available. Even a ramp for disabled guests to get into the water. Beach is sandy (gets very hot if you don’t have slippers!) and a strip of pebbles on the waterline. Lots of small cleaner fish which give you a free foot spa, but it can give you a shock if you are not expecting it..... Popular with locals and cruise passengers.

Perfect service and the best dishes in Katakolo.
The dishes are unique and delicious. The place is really beautiful and makes you feel like you are in an island. The service is quick and very friendly. Well done! I will visit it again for sure!

From Katakolon goes several times a day a train to Olympia. A good way to visit the sites there. When you are limited in time watch the depature time from Olympia.
An alternative way is the catch the bus at the Port. Costs for both are the same.

We only stayed for a short visit, but the instruments were fascinating. They ranged from the extremely old to the merely old.

We were wanderinmg (meandering, really) along the main street when we chanced upon this gallery. Although we weren't intending to buy anything, we went in on the basis that "it doesn't cost to look". Big mistake! The objects on display were high quality but, possibly because ours was the last cruise ship of the season, not high-priced. And because there were so few customers around the service was friendly, helpful and unhurried. We ended up buying necklaces for two favourite ladies back home and were delighted with the price, and the beautiful way they were put in chic-looking containers.

Agios Nicolaos Church is by the side of waterfront and mini-train station. It is traditionally of Greek color, white and blue. Nice to tour around and take photos on it.

Fabulous organised trip. Early pick up from cruise ship ensured arrival well ahead of the pack at the site of Ancient Olympia. Fab visit to local winery where we were so well looked after. Our driver knew so much of the history of the area and was enthusiastic in expressing it (despite him likely having done it hundreds of times before!). Thank you for a excellent organised tour.

Nicolos is the most hospitable, friendly and informative taxi tour guide we experienced in all our journey from Rome to Ravenna and including Greece and Croatia. He was simply a joy to learn from and experience Olympia, Pyrgos and the port area of Katakolon. I cannot recommend him more highly. Four of us journeyed together for about 5 hours...with 2 hours plus in Olympia, time in Pyrgos for a splendid lunch, and a mountain top view of the harbor. Nicolas was simply the best!

He was waiting for us right outside the port gate for out cruise which was great. Very friendly and punctual. Drove us to Olympia and then the winery and drove us by the beach (closed due to weather). Would recommend to anyone looking for a ride in the city :)

The very good comments on Tripadvisor encouraged me to book a half day tour with Dora and I can tell you that it was a wonderful and amazing experience. Dora managed our transfer from our ship to Olympia and back. We were a family of 10 in a luxurious Mercedes minivan. Dora answered all our questions and gave us a lot of information about the local history and culture. She was a great guide, I will never forget her kindness.
Free WIFI and water which was highly appreciated.
I can only encourage you to use her services.
Thank you Dora for these unforgettable memories.

    Amazing cruise!!!
Dimitris and Victoria were waiting for us with the comfortable speed cabin boat exactly next to the port. We started our cruise at 10:00 and we had one of the best experiences. We chose the local tour for 4 hours. The boat was fully equipped and the owners made our cruise even more exciting!!!
