We have a family tradition of visiting city history museums on the first day that we visit a new city, as a form of introduction to the local culture and history, and this museum provided a perfect opening to our...
There are many museums in Tokyo however the Edo Museum provides a superb overview of how people live in Tokyo...their homes, technology and culture.

A great experience and one of the best museums we've been to here so far.
This is the second of three local history museums built in the 80s/90s.

The Sumida Hokusai Museum Sumida 3.0 km away

It’s better than other popular museums often suggested.
It's 10 minute walk from the Famous Edo tokyo museum and if you plan to visit both of them considering starting with this one because the Edo Tokyo Museum is huge and will tire you for sure.

We were privileged enough to see the Great Spanish masters exhibition from the Prado but it regularly hosts fabulous works from the world's great galleries and museums.
I went to see the exhibition on the Masterpieces of Nabis from the Museum D'Orsay, which was very well done and interesting.

This fascinating museum is located near Tokyo Station and is an annex to the Bank of Japan.
National Museum of Western Art Taito 6.0 km away

It's nicely laid out and flows very nicely so whereas some museums explicitly label the different areas- here you follow the route round and enjoy the journey from biblical portraits through to modern art.
... TOKYO Based on a bequest by the Matsukata Collection, the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo, (NMWA), was set up in 1959 at the famed Ueno Park – the largest park in Japan and home to several great museums.

This place is a must visit place for train lovers, along with aforementioned railway museums.
I visited the Tokyo Metro Museum on a hot day in August with my 3 kids, aged 12, 10 and 7. My older two are big fans of trains, and the 12 year old is 'train obsessed' so coming here was his idea of HEAVEN!
Mitsui Memorial Museum Chuo 4.2 km away
#4 of 187 Museums in Chuo
The museum itself is housed within a historically protected building which I find appealing and the museum focuses on traditional Japanese arts (eg, themes revolve around tea ceremony and accompanying equipment).
This museum is easily accessible from Mitsukoshimae exit A7 which leads almost directly to the entrance to the museum.
Shitamachi Museum Ueno 5.5 km away

This is on the southeastern edge of the large park which contains lots of other, larger museums.
Even our 11 year old daughter, who declared all museums to be boring, was interested.
Tokyo National Museum Taito 6.3 km away

Located in Turbo park with other art museums, the science/natural history museum, and the zoo, around a huge mall with fountains and cherry trees.
if you are into museum, traditional cultural experience, or arts, going to this museum is the best for you! there are other museums nearby as well as the ueno park.
National Museum of Nature and Science Taito 6.1 km away

This museum is one of many museums situated in Ueno Park so if its here you're to visit, make sure you enter the building with the life sized blue whale sculpture outside, hard to miss but we managed it and entere...
the museum has relatively more "study by watching and reading" exibitits than "learn by experience" exibits comparing with other big museums in Takebashi and Odaiba but you and your kids can enjoy so much display...
National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation Miraikan
#6 of 25 Museums in Koto
But it definitely beats all the other museums in the unique way it is organized and how the information is presented.
A slightly different take on science museums, in that it encourages you to think about the future and how we might shape it or want it to be.

Tokyo National Museum The Heiseikan Uenokoen 6.4 km away

This museum is really big and when I was there, it had a special gallery with Chinese taracotta soldiers.

It is a museum for works of Mitsuo Aida who were poet and a calligrapher.
I really enjoyed this small museum.
The National Museum of Modern Art Chiyoda 6.0 km away
#2 of 69 Museums in Chiyoda
Located on the northwestern corner of the Imperial Palace area, this is a great museum for Japanese art, and although it focuses on modern art, it shows art of the past 2-3 centuries.
The Modern museum has an excellent audio guide which helped us make our way through the 3 floors of exhibits in the stunning building, which was designed by architect Taniguchi Yoshiro and built in 1969.
