The area is just on the water, with fortifications and views of the city, beaches and lighthouses. And weather permitting, enormous waves crashing into the shore and lighthouse.

The church is quite big and built to last, and nice to visit.

We were walking around town and found this charming church, complete with an atmospheric small, candlelit crypt.

This cathedral is unusual and impressive, whilst retaining an elegant simplicity. Its association with Cardinal Richelieu and historic cloisters make it an interesting visit. It also forms an elegant backdrop to the bars in the town centre - which has been refurbished in 2017).

Chanced upon this beautiful church. I believe it was concentrated in 1840 but on keeping with architecture of that period it looks a lot older.
Doesn't take long to walk around, however it's a lovely way to spend an hour (max).

This is a nice church in the centre of town. Open daily, the church has some lovely stained glass windows.
Set in the town square that hosts the Wednesday and Saturday market.
There are some lovely little cafes just opposite the church, nice to sit and enjoy an early morning beverage.
There is ample parking around the area.

Worth stopping in to see the two (sketchy) medieval frescos. The roof was repaired a few years ago and the interior well restored.

A magnificent church with beautiful vaulted ceilings and lovely stained glass windows. Don't miss the boat hanging from the ceiling.

The Eglise Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption is a beautiful church situated in the centre of the village. It is very picturesque from the outside with a lovely fountain bubbling away opposite! The inside is peaceful as you would expect and frequently there are exhibitions in the room attached to the side of the church. These can be art exhibitions or historic ones and often free or demanding a modest fee.
From the church you can descend to the bridge into the village looking back on the right to Le Monastère a picturesque housing development and then turn continue so that on your left is the old Lavage where the people of old used to do their communal washing! Walk opposite and find the lake where there is access all round to walk. There is a quiet spot with seating and statue of Mary cut into the stone cliff. The walk around the lake is not all hard standing and can be difficult for disabled and wheel chair bound people. As you walk around you come to the base of
Vouvant and look up at the battlements seeing how difficult the aggressors of ole would have found accessing Vouvant would be! There is an arch and walkway back up to the streets of the village where if you turn left at the top you will make your way back to the centre of the village and of course the church. On finishing sightseeing make your way to one of the three cafes!

A nice church that looks like it has been 'shoe horned' into it's location.
Though in reality businesses/restaurants have been built all around it.
Just off the river front this church is located in a bust restaurant/bar area and does look somewhat out of place.
Too be fair, though this is a busy entertainment area it is kept very clean.

This is a lovely historical place to visit if you are in the area. You are taken around by a French guide to the gardens and a little of the inside. English are given a written guide to follow, you get to know how the area evolved. The family are at home July and August so you can't go into the house during that time. Wouldn't recommend it for younger children and if raining you spend over half an hour outside so go prepared.

The important things to note about the abbaye are the restricted opening times and that it is a bit out of the way. It only seems to be open in July (from the 15th this year)and August and is only open for guided visits These at at 10am, 11am, 12 noon and 2.30pm. There might be another time later, I'm not sure. That said if you time your visit corectly and manage to find the place it is worth a visit if old historic buildings interest you. For directions from Jard go to the Route de l'Abbaye and drive along a fair distance until you see a sign directing you to the right down to the Abbaye.

The visit is guided and the young lady who took us round said she did not speak good English but actually her English was excellent and she gave us very good explanations. The Abbaye is quite large but is a private residence and only a small part is open to the public. These are however some of the imporant bits incluing the chapel and the cloisters.
