- Al GLondon, UK17 contributionsOnce you arrive at the island, the walk across the island is a proper 30 minutes walk but it’s all boardwalk and not difficult, just be careful not to run and slip! The hot springs are fantastic - a quick plunge in the sea mid way through our time there am than back into the warmth of the springs. You do need some kind of footwear because it is slippery. There are changing rooms (basic but completely adequate) there. This was a highlight of my vacation so far (using Jamie’s Whaling Station)Written October 28, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AnLil934 contributionsIf you like nature, mountains and water, you won’t get better than the UNESCO biosphere of Clayoquot Sound. Long settled by Americans, draft dodgers and Catholic priests, photos depict the First Nations on the West coast (Nuu-chah-Nulth Council Maaqtusiis from the area of Naciks or Ahousaht reserve) taken to several local historical Indian residential school sites. Cycling highway 4 or renting a car from Nanaimo airport offers a mountainous and scenic few hours’ driving stretch to Tofino, where a fishing vessel (G.I. Charles) or water taxi ride (Robinson’s Elsie Jay) can be prearranged from the government dock. To get to the Wellness Centre or Wild Side Trail on Ahousaht Nation’s Flores Island, pack food or ask someone knowledgeable of Ahousaht Fisheries about obtaining
local oysters, Halibut, salmon, red snapper, copper and cod fish. From Templar Channel /Clayoquot Sound’s waters you’ll spot whales, otters, or grazing black bears around Vancouver Island. Riding by Pacific swells at the sandy stretch near Esowesta Reserve and Casiiwa (tsa-shii-wa) Incinerator Rock at Long Beach (24-hour info. 250-726-3604) there are park washrooms; and past the Botanical Garden you can stop at shops. Seaman Luke Robinson of ElsieJay has everything you need to know if heading to destinations in and around Tofino. Rhino Cafe offers great coffee and a washroom stop in the town. Just outside Nanaimo on the way to Port Alberni, there’s an information centre on the South side of highway 4 with free restroom access and picnic tables. Further on, you can pick up smoked salmon at Tom Watts’ home and buy his cookbook during another stop West of Port Alberni. If staying at Tofino, you can also catch a boat to Flores’ skateboard park or Hot Springs, and enjoy a kayak excursion. You’ll be entranced by magical Clayoquot Sound, where the Pacific Northwest drew explorers over three centuries. It’s a beautiful place that’s full of marine adventures to die for.Written August 16, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We have no hiking experience but fairly fit and able. Down was harder and a bit scary at times, we went fairly quickly with 1 stops and it still took as long to get down as up.
When we got to the top we couldn’t see a thing, too much cloud cover. 20mins later it was clear. Well worth the hike for the view.
The ground was very boggy at the bottom and slippery then going into a steep incline holding roots to help pull us up. Quite the adventure!Written September 26, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Our guide was experienced and took us to a small cove where we saw a bear at the waters edge, we then moved further along the shore and saw a mother bear with two cubs. We also stopped to watch some sea otters and harbor seals which was a bonus.
This was without doubt the highlight of our Canadian trip and we couldn’t have asked for anything more, it was amazing.Written November 14, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This was the first trip of this kind we’d ever done. The otters were completely adorable, and we got to see them so clearly. The sea lions were funny and entertaining, so noisy! And finally we saw 8-10 grey whales, which was totally magical & awe inspiring. One was surface feeding so we could see a lot of the length of it. Plenty of tails as the whales dove down to feed. Thanks Jackie & west coast!Written October 22, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

These guys were beyond incredible - prices were excellent, the pilot was skilled, friendly, and exactly on time, and we saw whales on the way! plenty of room in the pontoons for all our gear. excellent safety briefing and everyone got life preservers.

The grey whales on the way there and the Orcas on the way back were added bonuses to the trip. Our boat captain Dave was really down to earth, friendly and knowledgable and really went out of his way to make it a memorable trip. We caught our limit within a couple of hours.
