Located at 323 Howe Street, not far from the cruise ship docks. Small, nothing remarkable caught my eye.

In my earlier review of George Wainborn Park, I said this piece by Doug Taylor was the highlight for me. The reasons for this are basically 3-fold: 1) George Wainborn Park is fairly small and is basically just “green space in Yaletown;” 2) Khenko is a kinetic sculpture; it uses 4 large sails to capture wind and help the heron’s “wings” flap in the wind. In that regard, the sculpture is dynamic – you never know how it will look from one day to the next; and, 3) The piece is highly symbolic in that it was created to celebrate the return of the Great Blue Heron to False Creek (see my earlier review on this site). In that sense, Khenko isn’t art for art’s sake, nor is it ambiguous in meaning. We know why it’s here. It fits the landscape and it sends a strong message of hope for us to consider.

Thus, as you amble about the Seawall and pass by George Wainborn Park, do take a few moments to enjoy this sculpture. It is unique and can teach us much if we have but the eyes to see and the ears to listen.

This art space aims to provide leadership to young people to be curious and become 'makers'. It is a small space downstairs in the main display area, but still worth a pop in for 10-20 min to have a look around.

The Republic gallery is a small gallery with around 6-10 pieces all concerned with the same theme. Without context, it was hard to fully appreciate the work and it was good that we found the accompanying commentary. We found it really interesting to see how the post cold war brutalist architecture was being hidden behind a facade of styrofoam Baroque style trappings, effectively creating a false history.
