- 47SLSSouthampton, UK140 contributionsMy review is somewhere between 3 and 4. The art gallery is small but well laid out and the exhibits we saw were interesting.. I felt the garden at the back has almost become an afterthought and need a a little work.
Be aware there is no cafe here so have a drink down Fort Road or elsewhere before coming. If you walk, as we did, and want a glass of water on arrival you will be out of luck. - hanap1Guernsey, UK12 contributionsThis is amazing. We have two boys, 5 and 7 and it was perfect. We touched, held and smelt (mammoth hair!) Dino fossils. Kay was beyond brilliant. She is knowledgeable, enthusiastic and frankly just an all round awesome person. We then got to have a go at digging away at actual fossils. Insane. Can’t recommend enough. I was in search of the perfect shoes. Elevators and stairs, interesting architecture. - maggie c22 contributionsI have been buying meat at this butcher for over 30 years. Great quality, great prices, great service. You must try one of their many types of in house made sausages! But recently my neice told me I had to try Rogers. I did, and I'm not going back to Purdy's ever again. I bought 10 Rogers Cocolate/Peanut Butter cups for my sister and one for me. - Val M1 contributionAvenue Gallery is my favourite gallery in Victoria, so when we renovated our house I looked there for the perfect piece of art for a feature wall in our home. I found the perfect painting, which the gallery owner, Heather, personally came and hung for us. Having Heather come in person to our home means a lot to us, so that this special painting by Shinah Lee is perfectly placed in its feature location. The pieces that Heather chooses for her gallery are unique and inviting. there is no pressure to buy - just super welcoming people and exceptional art in paint, glass, pottery, sculpture and jewellery. - C R1 contributionIt was a revelation when we discovered Sean Schuster and his art: spectacular landscape panoramas, dazzling cityscapes, and other breathtaking images from nature. All taken with a magician's eye for composition and light. But beyond that Sean is wonderful to work with. We decided we wanted a large edition of 'Sacred Falls' on the wall facing us as we descended our stairs. We sent him a photo of the location and he did an impeccable job of rendering size and frame alternatives of the image onto the wall. Based on the renderings we knew that the 7-foot version would be the perfect size. Through their efforts, in the fine, old Victoria neighborhood of James Bay, a gem of a bargain hunter's market springs up once a week. Locals know to be there when it opens at ten for the best finds.
Previous treasures have ranged from a Bose tv speaker to a cribbage board carved from an antler, from a 19th century Dutch etched plaque to Ronson dinner candles. Good used clothing, books, kitchenware and appliances, wall art, lighting fixtures, jewelry, luggage, furniture, and just plain old, odd stuff available for the bother of a good browse and a few dollars.
From May to September they'll be open Saturdays as well. It's a neat way to feel connected to the University of Victoria in nearby Saanich. Currently there is an excellent exhibit on aboriginal basket weaving called 'We Carry Our Ancestors' and in contrast perhaps, a beautiful mini show of modern designer Yolonda Skelton's clothing artistry.
