Our guide Pascal gave us a thorough and entertaining tour through this Victoria mansion and home of one of Canada’s greatest artists. While not many of the furnishings or decor pieces are original to the home, great effort has been made to recreate the atmosphere , the furnishings, and possessions within to represent the time period and the Carr family’s station in Victoria’s society. Many anecdotes of Emily Carr’s life and that of her sisters created a rounded view of life in Victoria during Emily’s childhood and later life as a female artist. The re-creation of the wall coverings and paint colours true to the time period shows the dedication of the society committed to preserving this home. Well done.

An observation, a query was, why is there no caretaking, simple sweeping or vacuuming to keep the entry, the hallways, carpets, and stairway free of gravel, leaves and dirt tracked in by guests. The time period rugs and lovely painted canvas flooring certainly will suffer from the accumulation winter debris,

I joined TA in January 2020 as I wanted to pass on
knowledge of the great places I come across, as well as
recognize the hard work, superb talents & full commitment of businesses doing a fine job. I have written 114 reviews, mostly giving 5 stars, some 4 & a few 3 but none 1 until this one. I feel an ethical obligation to follow two other reviewers on google, who wrote saying they were treated rudely, one noting the confrontational way of the owner. I, too, received similar treatment with the owner going as far as to accuse me of a “ploy” to get free products! All this I can confirm as the owner said this in emails. I was stunned by this calling into question of my character & motives & baffled at the logic of her suggestion I would spend billable professional hours on a “ploy” to get some 35$ of free product! The details are too numerous to go into but rest upon me wanting to get a gift to add to a pile of gifts I had collected to give my son for his b-day of a beer soap. A sort of “froth” on the top of the pile. His b-day was imminent & I thought as the beer brand was one he drank, it would provide nice humor. I was around some phone calls I made eager to get the soap in time & then a others when delivery instructions were muddled. Nothing which could not easily be sorted out with a polite return but that was not what happened.
My concerned phone calls (needed as it turned out) were labeled as harassment & my dealings as a “ploy” to get free products, in this case, the 4 bars of soap required for shipping. Who would use up some 2 hours of their professional time to get 35$ of free produce? It would never have occurred to me that business owners
would consider its customers capable of doing such questionable things, let alone actually say it to a customer - & in writing.
I was not sure what to do. Report it to business associations was an option but it seems it is not their mandate. Then I tried to make her realize her behaviour was inappropriate & perhaps a donation to a worthy cause would inspire reflection. No response. I know small businesses can be tough & thus I am caution about what I say but I know, too, that verbal abuse needs to be noted in the hope it is not repeated.
From the 2 google reviews I read, it seems I was not the first to be inappropriately treated. They are up there to read. The owner took on these reviewers, again making a hurtful suggestion that the one writer was associated with its competition. Hard to believe but it is there to read, as I found it hard to believe my interaction had been named as a “ploy” for getting a very small amount of free product. I suppose I may come in for the
same treatment for this review. I got a begrudging refund. Other soap firms dealt with have been great.

I had the pleasure of experiencing Victoria Flying Club (VFC) during the BC Aviation Museum’s annual open house celebration. The fine folks at VFC were offering pleasure flights in and around the Victoria area for about $75 per person. My partner and I jumped at such a great opportunity for a couple of reasons:

    1) It allowed us to fly on one VFC’s versatile Cessna 172S aircraft. The Cessna 172, if measured by its popularity and longevity, is the most successful light aircraft in history, with over 44,000 units produced today. Perfect for training, small group charters and sightseeing, it’s easy to see why this airframe has endured for well over half a century.

    2) The value for money (VFN) was outstanding. As I said, ticket cost was a mere $75 per person and our total flight time was about 20-25 minutes. Compare this to Harbour Air ($189 per person), and the overall value becomes all the more self evident.

    3) The tour was pretty thorough thanks to our pilot. During our time in the air, we covered Victoria’s beautiful coastline, flew over Butchart Gardens and parts of Saanich Peninsula before landing back at YYJ. The beautiful birds-eye view afforded by this unique experience was supplemented by our pilot who offered commentary as we flew along our route.

In the end, we were most pleased with our flight. It enhanced our “open house” experience tenfold by allowing us to take to the friendly skies on a gorgeous, clear day. If you get the chance, I’d highly recommend flying with the Victoria Flying Club because they offer personable, professional service; tours equal to, if not better than, the other guys; and, they’re friendly on the wallet! Thanks again!
