We found out about this place on another travel related website whilst researching what to do whilst in St.Johns, where we had 2 extra days added whilst the itenary caught up with us.
We wanted to take the hop on / hop off bus, but that had finished for the season around 3 weeks previous, so we took a taxi from the cruise port costing $12 one way,
it was windy when we got to the top, but we were fine with that, found the signposts to all over the world including the place in Cornwall, UK, where Marconi received the signal marking the 1st trans atlantic phone call from.
There is a celebration gun on the hill normally fired at 12 noon in season, luckily for us there was some visitors from Ireland and they fired the gun especially for them, twice.
We went into the tower to see the history of that phone call and I climbed on to the roof, before seeing the souveniers in the gift shop.
We walked back down to the city stopping off at other places en route.

This is a charming little village with very narrow streets. Drive slowly a be careful. Better yet, find a place to park if you can (very limited). and walk around. Be sure to take a tour of the Quidi Vidi Brewery and try their Iceberg beer.

This is not only a good building to visit and get some history of St. John's, but the residential area is all part of the fascinating history of the City.

This is an impressive War Memorial that is very well maintained. Great place to wander and reflect on the various wars that have occurred and be grateful for those who sacrificed all for others. There are other memorials to check out in the City as well that are a little smaller.

The building housed the then Newfoundland government and House of Assembly from 1850 to 1959. Its style is neoclassical, the white limestone imported from Cork, Ireland. A couple of odd points. A bank was in the basement. In 1850 the province's first bank robbery took place, the Newfoundland Savings Bank robbed of 413 pounds. The normal practice is for the governing party to sit to the right of the speaker. It was opposite in this building as the heaters were located on the left side. By tradition, even today the governing party sits to the left of the speaker.

One of the few wooden buildings to survive St. John's fire of 1892. Beautiful pipe organ and choir loft. Several placques that commemorate fallen soldiers--it is a church and province that is proud of its contributions to world peace. The church also offers a soup kitchen, Internet Access Centre, and a Winter Hot Breakfast Program to meet the needs of local residents.

While Bishop Mullock commissioned the church in 1853, its cornerstone was only laid in 1864. Financing anda manual labour shortage delayed the finish of the church. One place suggested it was completed in 1881; another, 1912. The latter date reflects the addition of a bell tower. It was done in a Gothic Revival style. Its interior is rather simple, consistent with its role as a parish church.
