- Jack WNepean236 contributionsA worthwhile place to visit, especially on a rainy day. A combination history museum and art gallery with lots of space. The restaurant looked very interesting. Parking is a bit of a challenge when it is busy. Why the two adjacent lots are not connected is a bit of a mystery when one is trying to find a space to park.Written November 4, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Marjorie B3 contributionsThe best museum of geological history that I've ever been to. Worth going and spending several hours! The organization and information is linear, accessible for those who are not geologists, and easily read and understandable.Written October 20, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Don MBelleville, Canada122 contributionsWhile visiting St. John's in October 2024, we enjoyed a fantastic lunch at Quidi Vidi Brewery after a morning of site-seeking lead by our Local Guide Lucille Conway.
The Quidi Vidi Brewery is obvious located in Quidi Vidi - a very unique location / small harbour in St. St. John's. This is a very sheltered habour, dotted with still-in-use fish shacks (see pictures). When in St. John's definitely visit this very scenic location.
Our lunch was excellent - my wife had the seafood chowder, which was exceptional and we share a large serving of fish and Newfie fries. Newfie were delicious - french fries topped with stuffing/dressing and covered with gravy.
For beverages, we shared a pail of Iceberg Lager, an exceptional light and crisp Lager beer and my wife enjoyed unique margarita flavoured beer.
Food and drink were excellent, the staff friendly and efficient, and the restaurant offers an lovely patio (covered and enclosed for October) with a great view of the bay / habour.
Highly recommend a visit to this brewery / restaurant and neighbourhood!Written October 27, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There were only 4 of us and I first inquired back in February 2024 about having a tour in September. I ended up in contact with the executive director of the foundation which now owns the church. He arranged a time for us to show up and that it would cost $20 a person to get an hour tour.
When we showed up, it turned out they were having generator problems and we would have to tour the Cathedral in the dark. But it was only for a few minutes and then the lights came back on. The executive director was the one who gave us the tour which turned out to be almost hours long. He showed us all over the interior and we were all very impressed with his abundant knowledge of the history of such a beautiful building. He even played one of the two organs for us. We ended up donation $25 a person for the tour. It was well worth it.
By the way, my friend's husband hadn't been eager to take the tour, but by the time we finished, he was very happy we had come.Written October 9, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The performers were very professional and talented with great singing voices. Loved the Newfie humor. The ambiance of the theater was intimate and lovely being located in an old church.Written September 15, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - empathologyRotterdam, The Netherlands617 contributionsDwarfed by the Catholic basilica up the hill, this Anglican cathedral) also called St Johns) shouldn't be over-looked. It felt very closely modelled on traditional English churches & cathedrals (and I've been to a great many), so this felt like a slice of England.
Simple yet elegant, it's not the biggest but it's a lovely building that doesn't shout out its position - just a nice restful soothing place for worship.
Come and compare with its Catholic cousin up the road.Written August 28, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We had a guide explain the significance of the wine vaults and had a tasting of the port. When the Portuguese stored their wine in Newfoundland, they discovered that it improved the taste. The wines was shaken by the rough sea voyage and stored in dark cool caves. We then could see the barrel vault that was used to store wine and some of the equipment used as well as old bottles of the port wine.Written October 20, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The Commissariat was built between 1818-1820 as the home and offices of the Assistant Commissary General – the supply officer for British forces in Newfoundland. Today visitors are invited to explore life in St. John’s in the 1830s when British rule was ending and the town was alive with talk of Newfoundlanders having the right to manage their own affairs.
An interesting walk with guided tour -S home has been restored (largely - some repairs still in progress) and set up to illustrate what it was like at the time - some very interesting history of development of City and area. Short walk from government house and St Andrews church which were also both worth seeing.Written September 25, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ChaitanyaCambridge, Canada1,457 contributionsMain mall for the city. Works well to spend a day or afternoon here. It has shopping, restaurants and gets crowded on the weekend. - Debbie SMontreal, Canada51 contributionsAlexis' art is lovely. She offers space in her studio for other potters as well which must speak to her character as an artist.
