- petesaundUnited Kingdom3,794 contributionsThis church was constructed in 1756 and after many alterations it sadly succumbed to a fire on Halloween night 2001 - the blaze destroyed most the contents and half of the building, which had been designated a national historic site as the second-oldest Anglican church in Canada. It was classified as Carpenter gothic revival architecture
because of its wooden rather then stone structure.
As Lunenburg is UNESCO protected finance was raised to reconstruct to the smallest detail an exact replica - extraordinary. It was fortunate that they had the craftsmen as Lunenburg was a large shipbuilding town through centuries notwithstanding the grand houses with their intricate wooden relief on their roofs windows and verandahs
requiring maintenance - so these skills remained in the town from generation to generation fortunately
It is such an architectural gem of great beauty with a fitting spiritual energy - you are humbled here by the sheer tranquillity
We were guided through the history by one of the proud volunteers whose family can trace their ancestry back to early settlersWritten October 23, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Pastor S79 contributionsThe church is nice, but hardly remarkable. However, ladies who serve as docents can share the background history and that is worth listening to. They'll tell you about this history of the pipe organ and the pews which are reserved for royalty. Without question, they are proud of their church and community and they want to winsomely share that story with you. I hope you get a chance to hear them.Written October 24, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- trimicmontreat359 contributionsThis is the oldest Presbyterian Church in Canada dating back to 1767. It does not have stain glass windows or a cathedral ceiling or velvet cushens on the pews. It does however exemplifies the simplicity of the early of the earliy churches of the 1700s.
This is still an active congregaion however, now a church affiliated with the United Church of Canada. Only wish we could have been there to attend worship on Sunday.

We got two knitted mitts using a pattern from Newfoundland, local soap, speciality baking (bacon balls) and fancy butters. We even met a local artist or two. All from going to the craft show at the church.Written December 8, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PAUL HAntigonish, Canada67 contributionsBuilt by Scottish immigrants coming to Canada after Culloden. The ceiling paintings, currently being restored, are by Canada's leading Church artist. - Jae LLong Island, NY5,904 contributionsDuring our shore excursion from the “10-Day Canada and New England” cruise aboard Caribbean Princess ship last October, we visited the great inventor Alexander Graham Bell’s exhibits at “Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site”. On the way back to our ship, our bus stopped by the Baddeck Village center a few minutes away for coffee and shopping. Instead of getting into a restaurant or shops, we walked uphill for a few minutes to an attractive church with classy façade in black and white. When we walked into the sanctuary, we were pleasantly surprised at the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the sanctuary. The interior decors were very simple and yet elegant. The bright light coming through the windows kept the sanctuary bright and warm. The simple stained glass window with Jesus holding a lamb was impressive. The recessed altar area was somewhat unique. This Catholic church with Scottish heritage was quite different from typical Catholic churches with ornate and solemn interiors. And, yet, we felt so warm and inspired in the sanctuary. There was a choir rehearsal going on at the time, allowing us to listen to beautiful hymns while we sat down on a pew for a while. A visit to this church is highly recommended to the visitors to Baddeck.Written September 16, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - larry sPittsboro, NC351 contributionsThis is a gorgeous Catholic Church in the heart of the French Coast of Nova Scotia.
It was open when we were there so we just walked in and took a few pictures. This church must seat almost 500....but where do the people come from? This has been well kept up unlike other churches in the area.

The woman who gave the tour knew much of the history and made connections to many aspects of the local area ... shipbuilding (many features in the church), Acadian history, local history, etc. Loved it, and will go again.Written June 13, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Karen F28 contributionsThis church is beautiful from the outside. Wish it were open when we were there. The pictures look beautiful. We did take many pictures of the outside as you don't often see a round church. It was interesting to read of the fire and to see how far they have come since then. I would like to go back some day to see the inside too.Written October 2, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
