- SuzyQu15Brooklyn, NY1,609 contributionsThese beautiful historic gardens have been gracing the heart of Halifax for over 100 years. We visited in the Fall when the beautiful foliage was on display. Apparently there are guided tours available, but, not knowing that, we wandered about on our own. There is a Victorian gazebo, statues, benches, a duck pond, and gorgeous plantings which change with the season. - Robert DBrooklyn, New York5,221 contributionsHigh atop a hill in the centre of the city is the Halifax Citadel. It is actually the fourth fort the British built on this site. I was welcomed by a soldier and a guard. Inside the Citadel is the excellent Army Museum, located in the former barracks..
Some of the people shown in the Army Museum are well known. During World War I, the Jewish Legion was formed by Britain. They trained at Camp Edward in Nova Scotia. One of those soldiers was Private David Green, who later became David Ben-Gurion, the first Prime Minister of Israel. Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae was a physician during World War I. He wrote the poem "In Flanders Fields", which is recited across Canada on Remembrance Day (November 11).
There was an exhibit about the fortress and the city titled "Fortress Halifax: A City Shaped by Conflict". One of the exhibits was a panoramic map of Halifax in 1879 with the Citadel in the middle. To mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, they had a special exhibit titled "Storm the Beach: D-Day Experience".

With the heavy fog both days we were there, the sounds of the foghorns and foggy views made for quintessential Halifax this time of year. - Robert DBrooklyn, New York5,221 contributionsPier 21 operated as an immigration station from 1928 through 1971 and was Canada's equivalent of Ellis Island. So it was appropriate for the Canadian Museum of Immigration to be based there. It is an excellent museum and I recommend it highly.
There were posters promoting immigration to Canada. There was a special exhibit devoted to the Enslavement of Black People in Canada. An example of someone who rebelled against slavery was Marie-Josephe Angelique. She set fire to Montreal in 1734 which destroyed half the city.
Other exhibits show a tourist class (third class) cabin on an immigrant ship in the 1950s. A fun exhibit was the test to become a Canadian citizen. Even though I am not Canadian, I knew enough about the country to pass the test. - SilverOrlovBedford, Canada2,680 contributionsA very nice place for a quiet walk. There are many places to sit. Very comfortable paths for jogging or walking the dog. Cyclists are permitted to ride on designated trails during Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. My wife and I came here when it was drizzling and a bit "stormy" near the shore, but it was even cool. Very nice and pleasant sea air. There are several small parking lots near entrances to the park.
Several interesting historical places and monuments.

- Robert DBrooklyn, New York5,221 contributionsThe Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is an excellent museum. One of the highlights of their collection is the actual house of Maud Lewis. She painted the doors, windows, and nearly every interior surface. Another exhibit was "VampSites" by Mitchell Wiebe. These works were created in 2011 inside a cold war bunker in Debert, Nova Scotia. We were offered a black light flashlight to use in the exhibit. "Miss Chief's Wet Dream", 2018, by Kent Monkman represents the point of collision between European settlers and Indigenous Nations. - gringatxMcKinney, TX553 contributionsWe were in town for this tattoo that was only 3 days long, getting ready to celebrate Canada today. We ended up getting tickets for the first night. This was an amazing experience.
It's a lot of marching military bands and a lot of bagpipes, and they also had the Highland dancers girls from Scotland that were really good. If You do not like loud marching band music or bagpipes, this is not for you.
They had some visiting bands from South Korea, Switzerland, the United States, Germany, and England, and the bands participated in different things. But it was all about music.
This was a really good experience and not something I have ever experienced before in the United States. Who knew a cat could rank higher than a person?? A great tour with great info, thank you to those who have kept and continue to keep her restored. - ExpatAgainandAgainHalifax, Canada482 contributionsThis is a great place to visit. We paddled over and had a great day of exploring, Geocaching, and hiking. I will go again. Not too busy as it's not easy to get to. You just need to plan your day. (However, some websites promote camping on the island. This is now prohibited. Too bad the websites aren't up to date.) Facilites (pit toilets), a great wharf, trails are easy on foot, views are incredible.
