This enormous building is built entirely of stone. Inaugurated in 1896, this building is located on the site of the former Jesuit college. Throughout the year, local residents and tourists come to the public square and gardens next to it to view the building, city overlook or just relax in the impressive park that surrounds it. This park contains many monuments of interest and there is also a Christmas market during Nov/Dec. Clarly the city is proud of this building and its setting, and they should be as it is very impressive and monumental.

We took an informative tour with our family. I learned a lot about Canada’s constitutional monarchy, as well as more about the provincial government. Very impressed that the tour was free & offered in English.

Most people just walk by the Old Post Office, heading to or from the Old Town. It is an imposing structure at three and a half stories. Originally built in the late 19th c in Second Empire style, several Beaux Arts’ aspects were added with reconstruction commencing in 1913. A statue of Francois de Laval stands in front of the building. It can also be admired from across the street at the Parc du Montmorency.

The city hall building in Québec City was inaugurated in 1896 and has been designated a national historical site of Canada due to its elegant external and interior architecture, with a secured status as one of the most majestic city halls in Canada.
