What travellers are saying
- Voyager55928334618Saanichton, Canada13 contributionsThis morning my husband and my friend and I took the 11am bus tour of the wildlife preserve with Doug. The tour ran a bit long because we ended up getting Doug talking at many of the stops, his years of experience really shines through when he talks about all different aspects of life for the animals within the preserve. I mentioned that I really wanted to get some good photos of the Lynx and he made sure we did before we left that area - it was much appreciated! We visited in October so there was snow on the ground but it didn't make it any less enjoyable. $30 for a 90 minute bus tour is an amazing price, and since we went for the first tour of the day it ended up just being us! This was awesome and I shared all of my photos with my family and friends. This is a MUST see for sure for anyone who likes to see wildlife outside of a zoo setting. I'm not a zoo person, but this wildlife preserve/rehab centre non-profit was an amazing visit and I'm glad we made the trip!Written October 23, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It was undergoing renovations so was a bit messy but that did not detract from our interest. Tour guides were very good.

Lovely little cafe and the educational walk down to the bridge was good. Designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1967, this old sternwheeler currently serves as a beautiful museum and pays tribute to a bygone era of riverboat transportation – back when inland water systems were the only means of connection between communities in the Yukon. Once a highway was built between Whitehorse and Dawson City in 1950, however, the sternwheeler, as a primary method of transportation, slowly went the way of the dodo. The SS Klondike, dubbed the “crowning achievement of riverboat design” by Parks Canada, is but a nod to these formative years in Yukon’s development.
Interestingly, the sternwheeler you see on display is actually the SS Klondike II (built in 1937). The original SS Klondike was built in 1929 and remained in service, ferrying supplies up and down the Yukon River, until it ran aground and sank in 1936. Key parts of the SS Klondike were salvaged and used in the construction of the SS Klondike II, which entered service in 1937 and served as a freighter until 1950. From 1950 to 1955, the SS Klondike II functioned as a “cruise ship” and even carried Prince Phillip during his one-day visit to Whitehorse. The SS Klondike II has served as a museum, operated by Parks Canada, since 1981.
Unfortunately, the SS Klondike was closed during my recent visit to Whitehorse; it is currently undergoing extensive restoration and renovation work. As such, I was only able to view it from the outside, but it was still an impressive sight. Walking up close, the ship dwarfs you and makes one feel quite small! It was, after all, the largest sternwheeler in the fleet!
As I ambled about the Millennium Trail, adjacent to the frozen Yukon River, I couldn’t help but get a wee bit nostalgic. The SS Klondike, an “impossible-to-miss landmark in Whitehorse,” greeted me as I entered the city and made a turn onto Lewes Boulevard in 2006. Now, here it was again, 18 years later – an iconic symbol of the city and, indeed, the Yukon Territory – saying “welcome back.” Awesome!Written April 25, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Nice little place; the taplist is a weebit short considering how much they have. I'm a dark beer guy and they had none available out of the 5-6 things on tap (it was August...so I kinda get it). The red ale I had was decent though. On the way out I saw they had a barrel aged stout that I would've preferred but don't know if you can drink from cans on-site.Written August 12, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - VillagerRickThe Villages, FL1,017 contributionsThe longest wooden fish ladder is impressive, even though this time of the year there are no fish. Still worth a visit if you are close, certainly will be more interesting next month.Written June 25, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Judith SGarden City, KS18 contributionsWoodcutter's recently renovated the space and now there is more room for patio seating and inside seating. We started off with a flight and decided to eat there. I had the pork tacos and a tamale. Both were excellent! My husband ordered the fish and chips which he really liked. We each ordered an additional pint and enjoyed the beautiful early evening on the patio. Service was very good, too. T
We would recommend getting reservations if you want to dine in as they got very busy as we were leaving. All in all Woodcutter's is a great place for a great meal and good beer.Written September 25, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
