Mac’s Fireweed Books has been called “an institution on Whitehorse’s main drag” by Brick Magazine. Indeed, with a history dating back north of 60 years, the proclamation is apt. For well over half a century, Mac’s Fireweed Books has been pleasing bibliophiles, casual book readers and tourists with its good selection of texts, calendars, toys, and book-related sundries. I would say, of the few shops we visited along Main Street, Mac’s was by far my favourite. And I’m not just saying that because I’m a lover of books! I also appreciated this store because it reminded me, in many ways, of another bookstore – Books and Company in Prince George: Both have a funky exterior (love the purple on Mac’s!); both have a focus on “the north;” both regularly feature local/northern talent and readings; and both offer perfectly cromulent service. But getting back to Mac’s. . .
I was impressed with the overall variety available at Mac’s: Yes, the “northern” selections are pretty vast, but so too are the other offerings. For instance, Mac’s features perhaps the largest magazine selection I’ve seen in any bookstore, be they independent or a large chain. Their bargain books in the basement are also noteworthy. In addition, the customer service we received was top notch – friendly and engaging!
When our all too brief visit was said and done, we departed with a few books, Yukon-themed magnets, and a couple of lovely souvenirs for the family. If you’re visiting Whitehorse and love books and a fun environment, you should definitely make Mac’s Fireweed Books a proverbial “must stop” on your itinerary!
