- Voyager55928334618Saanichton, Canada13 contributionsThis morning my husband and my friend and I took the 11am bus tour of the wildlife preserve with Doug. The tour ran a bit long because we ended up getting Doug talking at many of the stops, his years of experience really shines through when he talks about all different aspects of life for the animals within the preserve. I mentioned that I really wanted to get some good photos of the Lynx and he made sure we did before we left that area - it was much appreciated! We visited in October so there was snow on the ground but it didn't make it any less enjoyable. $30 for a 90 minute bus tour is an amazing price, and since we went for the first tour of the day it ended up just being us! This was awesome and I shared all of my photos with my family and friends. This is a MUST see for sure for anyone who likes to see wildlife outside of a zoo setting. I'm not a zoo person, but this wildlife preserve/rehab centre non-profit was an amazing visit and I'm glad we made the trip!Written October 23, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Lovely little cafe and the educational walk down to the bridge was good. Enjoyed getting our passports stamped.Written November 29, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

Designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1967, this old sternwheeler currently serves as a beautiful museum and pays tribute to a bygone era of riverboat transportation – back when inland water systems were the only means of connection between communities in the Yukon. Once a highway was built between Whitehorse and Dawson City in 1950, however, the sternwheeler, as a primary method of transportation, slowly went the way of the dodo. The SS Klondike, dubbed the “crowning achievement of riverboat design” by Parks Canada, is but a nod to these formative years in Yukon’s development.
Interestingly, the sternwheeler you see on display is actually the SS Klondike II (built in 1937). The original SS Klondike was built in 1929 and remained in service, ferrying supplies up and down the Yukon River, until it ran aground and sank in 1936. Key parts of the SS Klondike were salvaged and used in the construction of the SS Klondike II, which entered service in 1937 and served as a freighter until 1950. From 1950 to 1955, the SS Klondike II functioned as a “cruise ship” and even carried Prince Phillip during his one-day visit to Whitehorse. The SS Klondike II has served as a museum, operated by Parks Canada, since 1981.
Unfortunately, the SS Klondike was closed during my recent visit to Whitehorse; it is currently undergoing extensive restoration and renovation work. As such, I was only able to view it from the outside, but it was still an impressive sight. Walking up close, the ship dwarfs you and makes one feel quite small! It was, after all, the largest sternwheeler in the fleet!
As I ambled about the Millennium Trail, adjacent to the frozen Yukon River, I couldn’t help but get a wee bit nostalgic. The SS Klondike, an “impossible-to-miss landmark in Whitehorse,” greeted me as I entered the city and made a turn onto Lewes Boulevard in 2006. Now, here it was again, 18 years later – an iconic symbol of the city and, indeed, the Yukon Territory – saying “welcome back.” Awesome!Written April 25, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Nice little place; the taplist is a weebit short considering how much they have. I'm a dark beer guy and they had none available out of the 5-6 things on tap (it was August...so I kinda get it). The red ale I had was decent though. On the way out I saw they had a barrel aged stout that I would've preferred but don't know if you can drink from cans on-site.Written August 12, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Caoimhe M7 contributionsWe had the most amazing time with Northern Tales during our visit to Whitehorse! We booked the 3-night package with aurora viewing and added some day tours, and from start to finish, everything was seamlessly organized.
From the moment we landed at Whitehorse airport, we didn’t have to worry about a thing. Northern Tales handled every detail, making sure we always knew where we needed to be and when—everything ran like a well-oiled machine.
We also opted to rent winter clothing through Northern Tales, and that process was just as smooth. The clothing package was ready for us when we checked into our hotel, which made everything so convenient.
The staff were absolutely incredible! Everyone we met was welcoming and friendly, and they truly went above and beyond to ensure we had a fantastic time. We spent most of our time with Sydney, Matteo, Naomi, and Esteve, and they were phenomenal. Their enthusiasm and genuine interest in making sure we had the best experience made us feel truly special and cared for.
We were lucky enough to spend New Year’s in Whitehorse, and it was such a magical way to celebrate the occasion. The memories we made—especially the aurora viewing—are ones we’ll cherish forever.Written January 8, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. A group of four adults who love dogs. We had a glorious afternoon of gentle canoeing the first afternoon taking off from behind the lodge followed by a delicious dinner of bison steak prepared by Manuela. Breakfast the next morning was excellent and we departed at 9am for a spectacular day of canoeing at a different location. Some fun rapids of various levels added a little excitement. Stopped for a great lunch and carried on for more gorgeous scenery by canoe. Jeff was a skillful guide and he brought the dog named Little One along for the day.
As for the huge dog yard…We enjoyed helping to give the 124 dogs on the property their dinner and water in the evening and watching some return to their spots from being out for exercise in the larger pens. We went out for an evening walk with the 3 month old husky puppies and their mom which was a ton of fun. An incredible facility with a huge number of dogs who howl and bark from time to time but didn’t interrupt our sleep. A lot of them are retired and roam freely outside and inside the lodge and are very friendly. There’s even a bald eagle that visits regularly. If you are afraid of dogs, this is not the place for you. If you are comfortable with dogs, these ones are really happy and fun to be around.
The lodge was clean, the rooms and shared bathrooms were spacious and very clean (and dog free). This is not a luxury spot - it’s a rustic lodge that is very comfortable and friendly. There’s a fridge for guests to use and a large common area to relax in and a large deck that was fabulous in the summer with a gorgeous view.

We saw the northern lights and went dog sledding, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. We were novices but it didn't matter. There was plenty of instruction and help along the way. The guides were all so wonderful and everything ran so smoothly, from being picked up at the airport, to all the events. We can't wait to go back. We loved every minute, including the wildlife park and hot springs too. Although temps dropped to well below freezing, we were fine in our good quality arctic range gear. We also really appreciate the extra effort from the Arctic staff to make bookings for events at the last minute. We truly appreciate the top notch company and tour!Written February 21, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JTurtsCambridge, UK17 contributionsFantastic tour with Teena - she was so knowledgeable, friendly, organised and experienced. She answered all of our questions and asked us a lot back too! We went on a business trip out to a research station, with some stops along the way to give us more insight into Yukon life and the communities there. She also provided a delicious lunch and the weather was even on our side to sit in the autumn sunshine. Would definitely recommend.Written October 30, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
