excellent beer served in a cool, laidback environment. Good tunes and a great patio on which to enjoy the ale trail vibes.

Established in 1956, Kleanza Creek Provincial Park represents the first significant stop of our Mid-Summer adventure. Admittedly, I wasn’t expecting a whole lot en route to this location. My ill-informed notion that I “knew” about most things around Terrace coloured my thought process into thinking that the experience would be average at best; after all, could there really be anything truly good and beautiful within reach of the city? I certainly thought not, but can readily admit to pure ignorance in that regard. Upon arrival, Kleanza Creek completely blew my expectations out of the water and left me kind of awe-struck with its sublime beauty.

The park is of good size, coming in at 269 hectares. It is home to a number of well-maintained campsites, a couple of pit toilets, plenty of picnic tables, and benches strategically placed along the icy but beautiful waters of Kleanza Creek. I imagine camping here would be both peaceful and refreshing because you’re far enough away from the hustle and bustle of city life to fully appreciate nature at a deep and significant level.

From a recreational perspective, Kleanza Creek isn’t lacking. If you have the equipment, opportunities for kayaking, fishing and swimming are readily at hand. In addition, the park is home to one trail that is approximately 1 kilometer in length (one-way). Previous reviewers have described it as “steep uphill,” but I wouldn’t necessarily say that. It’s well maintained and family friendly. The trail leads to an attractive viewpoint, and provides a unique perspective of the canyon below. If you continue beyond the viewpoint – I’d say less than 15 minutes – then the trail does get a bit steep (use caution), but your reward is a close-up view of the fast-moving creek above the canyon. This, for me, is the real treasure. Watching the swirling waters amongst the granite rocks was almost mesmerizing. I nearly got “lost” in the untouched beauty that lay before me. My partner and I spent a good 20-minutes here admiring the power of nature while taking many a lovely photo.

An article published by the Terrace Standard earlier this year called Kleanza Creek “an adventurer’s paradise.” I think that’s an apt summary of this BC treasure. You can camp, spend time on the water, hike on the land, and just appreciate all that our Province has to offer. I came in here with low expectations, but left embracing the pace of nature.

The Kalum River has developed a strong reputation for being home to some of the best spring salmon and steelhead fishing in the world. Numerous articles have been written on the subject and many a positive testimonial has been given both, in print and on sites such as this. Indeed, there’s little more exhilarating than landing your first spring salmon on rod & reel. That feeling of adrenaline coupled with words of encouragement from friends does much to enhance the overall experience. But while I do enjoy the occasional bit of fishing, the Kalum River, for me, is more of a relaxing stop – a brief reprieve from the toils and pressures of daily life.

While there are many points of access, perhaps the most well-known is the boat launch area in Fisherman’s Memorial Park. Here you can obviously launch a boat and begin your fishing excursion, but you can also just come and admire the scenery. The green hue of the river + physical landscape juxtaposed against the graffiti laden railway bridge makes for a sharp contrast in imagery. It is strangely beautiful and, to my mind, represents a key theme found throughout all of BC: The natural world in a friendly tension with the man-made.

Now, sit at the picnic table, admire your surroundings and let the Kalum River cleanse your mind and soul!

Kitsumkalum Provincial Park is situated in a gorgeous, scenic and quiet forested area at the southend of Kalum Lake. The views from here are spectacular with snow-capped mountains , evergreen forests and colorful waters of Kalum Lake. The camping is free here and user maintained with room for 6 or 7 units comfortably. The beach is long and sandy with cold, glacial waters that are refreshing for a dip. Great place for kids to play and explore the beach and mossy parklike forest. Across the Kalum River is Redsand Lake Recreational Site and Hart Farm Recreational Site with free camping also. Redsand Lake has an impressive kilometre long , curved sandy beach. The views of the mountains here are scenic and superb for photos. Several campsites are right along the lakeshore with others up in the pine forest out of the wind. There are trails here that lead you to the Hart Farm Recreational Site and other places around the flat forests on the banks of the Kalum River across from Kitsumkalum Provincial Park. The access to Redsand Lake is via 26 kms. on the West Kalum Forest Road from the Tempo Gas Bar at Kitsumkalum village near Terrace. Recently the road was very rough with many potholes and there was a washout at Redsand Lake Recreational Site entrance. Redsand Lake is a great place to take kids and camp at the rustic campsites that are right on the lake. The scenery is breath-taking and gorgeous at Redsand Lake where the salmon fishing is good in season.

The hike on the Hai Lake Trail from the trailhead parking lot one and a half kilometres off Beam Station Road was very enjoyable on this mostly sunny day in mid- September. The road off Beam Station road is quite rough with potholes and a very rough, steepish hill just before the parking lot at the trailhead, with large rocks and ruts from a washout. The Hai Lake Trail meanders through an old growth forest of tall evergreens and is quite steep in sections and rooty. The trail is well worn and packed with no muddy sections. There are a couple little boardwalks over wet areas. The trail leads through a very parklike, mossy old growth forest with little underbrush where you can see far into the tall trees that are spaced apart. The trail angles uphill for about half a kilometre and then descends down half a kilometre to the little kilometre long pristine lake. It takes roughly half and hour in and half an hour out of the kilometre long trail to the lake. You can walk another kilometre or so around the lake if you so desire. There is a rope swing on the west bank that propels you out into the lake for a very refreshing swim in the clear, cool water. There are fish in the lake if you bring a rod to try your luck. At the lake there is an outhouse, fire pits , picnic tables and a small dock to fish or swim off. All in all kt was a very enjoyable hike that wasn't overly strenuous but a good little workout. When the sun is shining the shadows throughout the forest is mystical and photogenic. A good hike to take older kids and dogs to the lake.

This market highlight of the weekend in Terrace B.C. For over 30 years we have enjoyed the biggest market per capita in B.C.
Now full of new agrarians and small innovative artisans , there is something for everyone and a social hub to meet friends and family !
We are celebrating our first attempt at a winter market this year , and it’s been a great success!

We visited the place on a hot afternoon but were lucky to get a guided tour of the longhouses of the Gitselasu First Nation. Our guide Darrian told us about the history of the Gitselasu First Nations, showed us artefacts in the houses and a canoe he had carved himself. Excellent tour guide! Kitselas Canyon was the perfect place to end our tour- very peaceful.

Great cross country ski trails. Some challenging hills, and nice long loops if you want. Also has lit trails. If visiting for the first time, remember to bring cash or cheque, as it's an honour based system where you deposit your payment.

This is a high elevation park accessible with a high-clearance vehicle, such as a pickup or SUV. Not accessible in winter. There is a hiking trail to the alpine with beautiful views. Check BC parks website for maps.

The place in Terrace to go for gifts, locally made products and amazing art. It's not only beautiful, it's so convenient - you will find art and different locally made things from nearly 70 artists. This is my go-to place for shopping for gifts, face masks and any time I want to find something unique. The staff is very helpful and generous. I will be back soon!

I shop at Skeena mall and like the cleanliness of it! Most of the merchants are friendly. Only wish there were more outlets to choose from. I like the fact that there is a grocery store and a drug store included.

Awesome place to catch a show with amazing popcorn and candy. Could use larger fountain soft drinks and more snack options. But the place brings back so many memories!
