- carol g12 contributions200 artists from along the west coat and across the country all contributed to this stunning 11 foot by 21 foot mural. This is at the Galiano Inn and Spa and you can buy copies of it. It's beautiful.Written July 9, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - kabukiarmadilloVictoria, Canada67 contributionsAs part of a recent stay at the Galiano Inn, we arranged for a treatment at their in-house spa the Madrona del Mar.
The scheduled treatment included a 30-minute eucalyptus steam batch followed by an hour long full body massage.
We enjoyed the steam bath, but were somewhat let down by some minor issues with timing and information.
Similar to our issues with the inn, there was no briefing about the sequence of events.
When we arrived fifteen minutes before the scheduled time, we were required to fill in a health questionnaire and invited to enjoy some herbal tea. We were told to take our time and that there was no rush to start the steam.
Except that there was...
Because our massage time at 2:45 WAS NOT flexible -- as we later learned -- and that the steam had to end fifteen minutes before the start of the massage we lost about ten minutes of steam time. We had unknowingly lingered a few minutes too long over our tea because we were told we could. (The issue seemed to be confusion between the two separate staff members serving us at various times...)
About twenty minutes into our experience the steam was turned off, and the lights unexpectedly flashed. We didn't know what that meant, or what we were supposed to do.
On our own initiative we exited into the shower room, only to discover that no towels were available. We had to stick our heads out and ask for them. It was only THEN we were told that we should have picked one up from some basket that was back at the check-in. (Why wouldn't the woman who took us down to the room not have noticed our empty hands and said something to us?)
Again, it all speaks to a lack of attention to the small details that separate an acceptable experience from a great one.
But...
Whatever annoyances we had about the steam experience evaporated after our massage experience.
My wife and I have had some good massages in our time, but the ones that Karrie-Ann and Dani (hope I've spelled those name right) delivered were one of the best, if not THE best.
The massages took place in a small rustic and picturesque private cabin at the back of the property. Outside our immediate window, the sound of a small waterfall created a relaxing backdrop.
Prior to my massage, Karrie-Ann confirmed that I was good with a hard massage, and I gave her my okay to go to town on my back. I will say that my massage hurt... but it hurt in a good way. I was grimacing as my masseuse somehow honed in on every knot in my back and massaged them into submission.
When it was over I felt like a pile of rags, I was so relaxed. My wife did nothing but rave about her massage for the rest of the day.
So, on the whole, the excellent massages more than made up for the missteps of the steam experience.
We will certainly do the spa again in the future when we come back to the inn. However, we will take the initiative and confirm procedures with staff in advance.Written March 4, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Greens are in great shape, and its the warmest place on Galiano Island. We didn't even need a tee time and they picked us up at the Marina for free, we gave them a $10 donation. Food was great and reasonable golf was cheap $35 for 18 holes!Written October 9, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - GulfIslandsExpertSalt Spring Island, Canada57 contributionsAmazing bookstore, with great selection, great staff. On such a small island, it is amazing they are able to create this great atmosphere and provide such an amazing array of books. The "staff picks" are a great way to highlight "best of".
The Literary Festival in the middle of winter is the best event in the Gulf Islands. Make the trip, it's worth it! Just walking distance (one block) from the ferry.Written February 12, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The kayak was in great condition and perfect for the excursion.
By far the biggest plus was the amazing insider knowledge given to us by Ben. He told us about the best route to get there and special places to spot wildlife (including baby seals!) on the island. Our trip was made significantly better because we followed his advice. We were also able to book a shuttle to get to and from the ferry terminal, which was incredibly helpful. We would recommend Gulf Island Kayaking to anyone visiting Galiano Island and hope to come back soon. Thank you!Written August 17, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
