The views of the Seine are great and there are benches along the bridge. Claudine, the host, is such a sweetheart! The apartment is on the 3rd floor and was exactly as advertised. She was there to greet us, answer our questions, and make sure we were comfortable. The apartment is close to many restaurants, a metro stop and several bus stops. We spent 4 nights there and got to see many of the city's attractions and neighborhoods. Boulevard Saint-Germain was the most important part of the reconstruction of Paris by its prefect Haussmann during the era of the Second Empire. For the sake of one boulevard, a dozen medieval back streets were demolished, including part of the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Pres, which gave the boulevard its name. The oldest church in Paris, Saint-Germain-des-Pres, is the little that remains of the Paris that Dumas and Balzac described. Built in the XI-XII century, the Romanesque church was part of the Benedictine abbey. The great philosopher and mathematician Rene Descartes and the Polish king Jan Kazimierz Waza, who preferred the status of abbot to the status of king of troubled Poland, are buried within its walls. The small square next to the church is named Sartre-Beauvoir in honor of the famous existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul-Sarthe and his wife Simone de Beauvoir, author of the famous book "The Second Sex". The philosophical couple in the 40-50s of the XX century chose two rival cafes Les Deux Magots and Café de Flore for work. The name of the first cafe, founded in 1885, comes from two Chinese gods left over from the store that used to be here. This cafe became a favorite of Breton, Boris Vian, Apollinaire, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Wilde, Faulkner, Picasso. Café de Flore was founded two years later. During the Nazi occupation, it was the only place in Paris where there were always eggs. This is still the "trick" of the cafe. By the way, both cafes, along with the Lipp beer hall (151 Saint-Germain), are recognized as historical monuments. And that's right, a significant part of French and American literature of the 20th century is written here... by the way, about books. In addition to the expensive boutiques, Saint-Germain is the location of good bookstores. It had so many different parts which were clearly put together with a lot of care and everything was really fascinating. The owner was also really nice and welcoming and clearly explained the best way to go around the museum. - MidwestKathMDetroit, MI1,087 contributionsWe sought out this charming Parisian square in the St. Germain de Pres neighborhood to pay homage to the film The Age of Innocence and the scene where Newland Archer comes with his son to reconnect with Countess Ellen Olenska but isn't able to do so. And it lived up to our expectations. It was quiet and peaceful on a sunny Sunday morning. Beautiful trees. The surrounding buildings are architecturally representative of Paris. - BradHong Kong, China175,767 contributionsThis is a monumental fountain fitted into a building facade at Place Saint-Michel on the Left Bank side of the Seine. It was designed by architect Gabriel Davioud (1860) and based upon the concept of the Acqua Felice fountain (Rome).
The fountain measures 26 metres in height and features a bronze of St. Michel with raised sword, flanked by red marble Corinthian columns, bronzes of lion headed dragons with water spouting from their mouths into a basin below.
