- B Dobson3 contributionsStaff were very friendly and I found the art was well preserved and presented. I found the informational signs around the area to be very useful and that they contributed to my understanding of the art in question. Good for a novice that doesn't get the art!Written November 15, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Terry and Chris... HDowerin, Australia73 contributionsThis inexpensive trip was one of the highlights of a 3 month tour, providing wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and the layout of the city. The only downside was the cafe at the top; a very poor selection of drinks and snacks.Written July 17, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Gareth DPlymouth, UK11 contributionsGeneral information that probably most people would know about WW2 but with more background and detail on the French resistance and the local influence and activities that went in in and around the Grenoble area.
This museum's exhibits contain English and German translations underneath the main French texts.Written February 26, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Navigating mountainous terrain is difficult even outside wartime, but was particularly so during WW I. Their courage and resilience is highlighted and lauded.
Throughout, fine exhibits relay the history of the battalion. All the essentials are well covered including the role played by horses during those terrible times.Written December 18, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. An arch at the entrance way, all in stone, is marvellous, evocative and historic.
Housed in the former convent of Sainte-Marie d'en-Haut that originates in the 17th century, it is a wonderful setting for the displays.
Interesting to follow the historical timeline that is well documented. An exquisite chapel is a treasure, ornate throughout.
An Egyptian exhibition was underway with engaging artefacts reflecting that exceptional civilisation and culture.
Tranquil gardens are gorgeous. Deck chairs are laid out for anyone wishing to relax and be imbued with the ambiance. A further remarkable feature here is the serpentine and almost sculptural formations and orientations of the trees.Written December 16, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The basement is the starting point where the original roman footprint of the first christian church was unearthed (during construction of an early tramline) as an archaeological site of importance. It is now preserved and displayed below the current cathedral. The rest of the museum is spread over 3 levels displaying artefacts recovered from the locality covering the pre-history of the area and then concentrating upon religious artefacts through the ages.
There is a video reel covering every year of the 20th century and though interesting I had to move on after reaching 1939 as time was running short - I felt that this exhibit could be edited into a rather shorter format, perhaps by decade rather than annually.
Like so many others of its type it turns out that this small less-publicised display is far more interesting than some of its better known and more illustrious brethren. It is also free to enter. Make an effort - it is worth it.Written July 22, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Shakey10Melbourne, Australia36 contributionsThe entry to the museum is a little confusing, with no ticket prices or entry information displayed. I also did not know that an audioguide (presumably in French only) was available until I was inside and saw the logos and prompts on displays.
The displays are written in nearly only French, so if you don't have a basic grasp of the language then you may not get as much out of it. The displays are quite aged, and the building itself is beautifully old.
It's relatively small, so can be walked through in just a couple hours. - tinaNtravelSan Jose, CA2,011 contributionsLarge high ceiling. Beautiful altar and stained glass around the altar. On both sides of the altar on the sides are beautiful small chapels. A number of pretty statues. Unfortunately a lot of the walls and wall paper or painting is crumbling and is in need of repair and restoration.Written December 25, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
