The medieval Old Town (Altstadt) of Nuremberg dates back nearly 1000 years and is situated between the Hbf Station (south) and Nuremberg Castle (north). It includes the areas on both sides of the Pegnitz River along with numerous historic attractions and remnants of the old city wall and defensive structure from the Middle Ages.

In addition to historic churches, town hall buildings, bridges, towers and public squares, there are numerous monuments, street markets mixed in with modern department stores, shops and quite a few restaurants and hotels as well. The Old Town is pedestrian friendly, everything is walkable and within fairly close proximity, meaning you don't have to have a vehicle or rely on too much if any public transportation during multiple day stays in the city.

We recently spent 4 nights in Nuremburg this past December, greatly enjoying the annual Christmas Market (Christkindlesmarkt) that made use of the largest public squares around Old Town, creating enjoyable market scenes, lots of mulled wine and seasonal foods and entertainment that made our visit at this time of year very rewarding despite the cold weather.

We also enjoyed being able to make a day trips out of Nuremberg to places like Bamberg while being able to return for Christkindlesmarkt activity in the evenings. Would highly recommend visits at this time of year, something we've done a couple times now and will likely do again in the future.

Kaiserburg Nürnberg is a palace included in the Bavarian Castle Pass (14 day or annual). Our family visited the Kaiserburg Nürnberg in Sept. 2024. We found that the castle ground is standard and normal. However, what shined was the history explanation of the castle, the view from the Castle Tower (included in the ticket price), and especially the excellent tour given at the well of the castle.
We find that the young man who was given the well of the castle tour that day to be particular energetic, and gave an excellent English tour (which were the majority of the audience that day, only one guest indicated that she can speak German). His witty narrative helped us appreciating the construction and the maintenance needed for the well of the castle, and greatly improved our experience.

Such an overwhelming experience. Really moving and hugely informative. Exhibition is sensitive and deals with the difficultly of what to do with such a site of awful historical significance. The area around the stadium is really quite picturesque and at odds with this experience. Really recommend spending some time here while in Nuremberg.

Slightly surreal as I have seen the courtroom so many times on screen, and then to actually be in the room was mind blowing. It was a really informative experience. It is well organised, and the audio descriptions were excellent. I learned a lot. We were really in the city for the Christmas market, but were so pleased we made the decision to see this too.

Set in the Old Town it is really atmospheric and pretty....I have been to several German Christmas markets and this had the most traditional feel so far. The stalls were varied and thankfully mainly authentic rather than cheap imported tat for sale. I would have to say that it was even busier than I expected, and I would have struggled if I wasn't able bodied....it was a crush unless we went at 10am when it opened...later and particularly in the evenings it was uncomfortably busy. I wouldn't have wanted to have young children with me..just too much of a crush. However, we didn't have kids with us and we are able bodied and it was beautiful.

We spent a handful of nights in Nuremberg this past December and enjoyed visiting a handful of churches around the city including St. Lorenz located along Konigstrasse at Lorenzerplatz. The church is open from 9am to 5.30pm (Mon to Sat) and 1pm to 3.30pm (Sun). Entry is free but there is a suggested donation of €2 per person. It is a fine church worth 20-30 minutes to walk around and enjoy.

St. Lawrence was mostly constructed during the 14th and 15th centuries and is a fine example of Gothic architecture. Originally a Roman Catholic Church, St. Lawrence converted to Lutheran around 1525. Interestingly, many of the earlier church treasures were spared during the Reformation Period, thus we find the interior rich with fine chapels, altarpieces, sculptures and artworks. The hanging 'Angelic Salutation' by Veit Stoss (1518) and the delicately carved sandstone Tabernacle by Adam Kraft (1496) near the front of pillar of the choir is remarkable. The church also possesses the largest church organ in Germany.

The exterior of St. Lawrence is impressive as well. The facade features a niche portal, rose window and two bell towers, mirroring St. Sebald Church on the other side of the River Pegnitz. At times of the day, you will hear the bells of St. Lorenz playing if you are on the nearby streets outside the church. A quick walk around St. Lorenzplatz on the sides allows you to view the main body as well as a couple of fountain monuments placed around St. Lorenz.

The German National Museum in Nuremburg is located between Kornmarkt and Frauentormauer. Opening hours are 10am to 6pm daily with extended hours until 8.30pm on Wednesdays and closed on Mondays. Entry is €10 per adult and includes access to several temporary exhibitions in addition to the permanent collections which can easily take up several hours to explore at a leisurely pace. There is a basement level cafe along with locker usage if you want to store your coats and belongings during your visit.

Interestingly, Germanisches Nationalmuseum is the largest museum of cultural history in Germany. There are over 25,000 items on display covering a wide range of time periods and subject matters relating to Germany's history and heritage. There is a very helpful museum map available which greatly assists in planning your visit if time is limited. We found the permanent collection to be laid out well but given the scale of things to see, the map was quite useful in helping make our way through the entire museum.

There are many interesting things to see throughout, known more so than Martin Behaim's Globe, the oldest surviving globe in the world dating to the late 15th century. The museum website provides useful information on the collections of items that are on display. This can be a resourceful tool to use if wanting to think about what to target seeing prior to your visit.

Overall, we really enjoyed Germanisches Nationalmuseum and will gladly revisit the next time we are in Nuremburg.

The museum went beyond explaining the development of international law and the Nuremberg Trials to provide a balanced perspective of the period between the world wars. The audio guide translated the written text into English allowing us to fully understand the material. There was also a brief explanation of the Japanese tribunal and the events after the Nuremberg Trials.

Well-organized and informative museum organically partially chronologically and partially by theme. Many of the information signs have english translations, and there were small play areas for children on each floor. An innovative and fun way to learn about the history of Germany and, in particular Nuremberg, through the evolution of toys and toy production.

This place is currently undergoing some sort of restoration, but probably at a slow pace, as there were no workers visible.
There are photos, how it looked before. It was completely demolished and a lot of work was done. But it is not enough yet - half of the place is closed for safety reasons, documentation center is closed too and the only information, you can get on boards is, how is are the restorations going, what is the intended state and how much it was damaged before. No relevant information on the history.
4* is the historical authenticity. If you are already in Nuremburg, dont miss it. If you plan to visit Nuremburg to see it, dont do that, you will be disappointed.

The Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche) is a 14th-century Gothic church at Hauptmarkt in the center of the Old Town of Nuremburg. It is the centre stage building at the annual Christmas Market and a church well worth making time to visit while spending time in Nuremburg.

The interior is small by comparison to larger churches around the city like St. Lawrence and St. Sebald, meaning your can enjoy the Gothic look and feel of the small nave and its features rather quickly. There are information cards within that you can use to learn about the long history of the church. A few of the paintings on display are really impressive.

The exterior is lovely. You'll find a gabled facade with small spires and the famous Männleinlaufen, a mechanical clock with a history that dates back over 500 years that performs at 12pm (noon) each day. This is a neat thing to see if you are planning to be around the market square around midday.

Hauptmarkt is the market square in the heart of Nuremburg that has been an important public square since the Middle Ages. There are interesting attractions on the square or very nearby in most directions, starting with the 14th-century Gothic style Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) and the Charming Schöner Brunnen on the opposite side of the square.

Hauptmarkt is also an important location for annual events and festivals including the world famous Nürnberg Christkindlesmarkt (Christmas Market) held during Advent near the end of each year. This is a wonderful time to visit the square and Nuremburg in general. We also enjoy trying local speciality Lebkuchen while there at famous shops like Schmidt and Wicklein. A Nuremburg (3 in a bun) sausage and gluwein or two make an important part of visits during this time of the year as well.
