What travellers are saying
- ReservarldenLondon, UK2,045 contributionsLocated in the heart of Bonn this museum is a delight and it’s free. It also has a reasonably large book/gift shop at very fair prices. The museum itself is free of charge and you’ll probably need at least and hour to get dictate yourself about Germany’s recent past from 1945 until the mid 2020s. Well worth popping in!Written September 21, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- GololoStockton, CA135 contributionsMade the journey from Cologne just to go see Beethovens home growing up until age 22. 2 spiral staircases that go up and down. The museum is in a downtown type of area. Interesting artifacts and paintings.
There is a room upstairs to listen to a few of his pieces played by what I assume is a local orchestra by headphones. 🎧
You have to download an app to listen to the commentary in your native language or German.Written February 8, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It’s a research facility but also popular with the public and the local birdsWritten September 1, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Buggy KoopCanada5 contributionsI spend a lot of time in Bonn a lot and this is one of my favourite places to go! I never get tired of it! There’s always so much to do even when there’s no events on. It’s a great place for runs, walks, a picnic, cycling, kick around a football, and so much more! Since it’s so big it never feels busy - even when the flohmarkt (flea market) happening during the warmer months. There’s also beautiful ponds and it’s a great place to walk along the Rhine!Written August 22, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sandy WPhoenix, AZ492 contributionsBeautiful cathedral - still lots of scaffolding around, but we did manage to go inside for a quick look. The architecture is just amazing. Definitely worth a visit whilst in Bonn, and close to the market.Written February 8, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Alison MGalway, Ireland7 contributionsExcellent way to spend an afternoon in Bonn. Suitable for all ages. There is plenty to see, everything from insects to animals....big and small. Definitely worth the visit. There is a photography exhibition on at the moment too, unbelievable photos. The junior section showcases amazing talent .Written January 2, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Harrison F. CarterAuckland, New Zealand12,832 contributionsNice Christmas market that stretches across several sections of the city centre, and worth wandering through each. Visited during and the day and at night, with the night obviously being more atmospheric.Written January 15, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Harrison F. CarterAuckland, New Zealand12,832 contributionsNice old market square and a grand old building... still operating as a market, but excluded from the Christmas market celebrations.Written January 15, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Avi PTel Aviv, Israel691 contributionsThis nice museum covers the history of counting technology and calculators from about -5000 B.C. until about 1980. Exhibits starting with simple pebbles and abacus devices, through more sophisticated calculators such as Napier Bars, more complex mechanical calculators and through to the modern IBM computers.
Some complex mechanical calculators require hours of study to understand the exact operation.
Older guys will remember the motorized calculators of the 1960's that are not very different from their 17th century predecessors only with motors rather than handles.
One conclusion is that the progress during the last 50 years overshadows the previous 5000 years - exponential explosion of technology.
What I missed mostly were: an Enigma Machine exhibit, a modern laptop & smartphone (and a not so modern Casio scientific calculator & HP handheld), a more in depth explanation of the mathematical basis for some exhibits (especially the Napier Bars) and basic explanation of Bulean Math which is the basis for modern electronic computers. An indication of future trends could be very interesting too.
The exhibits are explained in German and some English, There are English explanations available on nearby pages, not so convenient, but comprehensive.
On the Saturday that I visited, entry was free.
Nice modern building, very nicely maintained and clean.
Location is walking distance from Bonn central Rail Station.
From what I saw, parking is not available nearby (the parking in the train station is always quite full).Written March 16, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The statue was created to commemorate the 75th birthday anniversary of Beethoven in 1845. Beethoven died in 1827 but was born in 1770. What is amazing about this square is that world leaders came to the inauguration ceremony. This included Queen Victoria of England and the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Considering that Beethoven had been dead for 18 years, the ceremony gives you the knowledge that he was certainly not forgotten.Written March 21, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Karla PIstanbul, Türkiye18 contributionsWe live in Bonn, Germany and visit this area of town each year during the cherry blossom season. The blossoms come and go quickly, so scheduling a walk-through along this street and nearby paths during the month of April is a must. It is gorgeous and quite the photo opportunity! The streets become fully pedestrian (except for the residents who are allowed to park there) during these few days/weeks, making for a leisurely stroll.Written January 30, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
