If you go to Montserrat - which you should! - it's definitely worthwhile to take the funicular up beyond the Basilica and monastery for some amazing views and a variety of walks.
You walk through strange rock formations, with beautiful trees and spring flowers, and are rewarded with amazing views from the Mediterranean to the Pyrenees.

Once we arrived at the top, we walked a well paved gravel trail through more gorgeous scenery and breathtaking views of the valley, the unusual mountain peaks, and hummingbirds, butterflies and flowers galore.

... either down to Santa Cova or higher to St Joan where you can easily hike back down on one of several paths, all of which offer great views and sacred historical landmarks on fairly wide well maintained paths.
What a great way to visit the monastery the view from the cable car is wonderful and it makes for a quick trip up the mountain as long as you are visiting on a busy day.

We chose the right path and had fantastic views of the steep valley below as well as the monastery facade and cable car above on our left.

The views are wonderful and if you like hiking make sure you wear your boots and bring walking poles for there are many marked trails to the peaks that surround the Monastry.
This Abbey is well known as a pilgrimage site, beautiful church situated in a scenic and spiritual place.
