Beautiful Italian castle set amongst rolling hills. Wide selection of restaurants and photo opportunities. Highly recommended. Prices at eateries are very reasonable considering the surroundings.

I’ve holidayed in San Benedetto Del Tronto for more than 40 years. My father although came to the UK in his mid teens, was born here and I have family that live there. This is my favourite place and has been for years, because it’s not a known tourist spot, mostly Italians who have travelled from cities to enjoy a beach holiday. I love that this is an old town, which is truly authentic, if booking a hotel you’ll be spoilt for choice and most of the hotels are literally a cross over to the beach. The chalets are fantastic, particularly Medusa, La Croisette, & Andrea’s, at night some of these chalets turn into great places to enjoy a meal, or enjoy a dance with a cocktail in hand listening to some classic tunes with great DJ’s.

It’s one of the best places for families as most of the hotels provide great children’s entertainment my favourite is Hotel Relax. In addition to the long strip of beach which runs along from Grotte Mare to Porto de Ascoli, SBDT has a lovely centre where you can shop, eat, drink and enjoy the best ice creams and a glass of aperol spritz.

It’s an unspoilt area of Italy which unlike Sardinia, Naples or Sicily is not a first choice for couples or families but it is worth a visit as this place has everything you would desire when booking a holiday abroad.

This beautifully restored Palazzo houses a treasure trove of renaissance art – a real tribute to Federico Montefeltro and his successor. The building itself has vaulted ceilings with flowery decorations, and is a remarkable display of renaissance architecture. We were able to attend a musical concert given by a trio of wind musicians. This experience gave us a feeling for the deep cultural contributions of the Duke and his wife to Urbino.

Special place. We had beautiful weather on this day for a walk up to the caves. So much work to build this chapel here. Remarkable!

The Shrine of the Holy House is the main reason to visit Loreto, which is a small town and can be easily seen in a few hours.
This is one of the holiest and most visited pilgrim destinations in Italy because it contains the family home of Mary, mother of Jesus. This is where she grew up and where the Archangel Gabriel appeared and told her that she would become the Mother of God.
It’s a curious sight. The entire house is contained within a large, marble structure designed by Bramante at the back of the church. A one-way ramp allows you to walk through the house which is a very simple, stone affair.
How the house came to be here is the most curious story of all. The most popular tradition is that flights of angels transported it from Nazareth. According to another story, Crusaders saved it from the Turks who were about to capture Jerusalem in 1291. Another claims that the powerful Angeli family shipped it to Italy.
Interestingly, technology backs the authenticity of the house. The building materials can be identified as originating in the Holy Land and building techniques, cuts found in the stones and inscriptions confirm that this is very likely to be the real deal.
There is almost no information at the Sanctuary so it’s helpful to read up on some of this beforehand or get a good guidebook.
Apart from the Holy House, the chapels at the back of the basilica have some beautiful artwork, including a painting of St Sebastian by Marche artist, Lorenzo Lotto.
    TIPS:
    * Photos are not allowed inside (although many people were ignoring this).
    *Entry is free
No bare shoulders or midriff, no shorts or short dresses. No-one seemed to be enforcing this but take a wrap or scarf just in case.
GETTING THERE: We had a car which made the trip to Loreto very easy. The town centre is a ZTL area so you can't drive through it or park within the city walls. On a previous trip, we parked for free on the streets around the Porta Romana side. This was good because the street parking was free but we did have to walk about 15 minutes to the basilica. This time we used the Via Castelfidardo public carpark. It was convenient but it was paid parking and we had a lot of trouble with the metres which wouldn’t take our cards. In the end we had to change some money and use coins. Take coins and you’ll be fine.

It is a magical place, we arrived at 8pm had to jump.in the warm sea. There was a yoga class on the rocks. We loved the peace and tranquility compared to civitanova where we were staying. However it is probably very busy during peak periods and parking would be hard. Steep walk down

The Riviera del Conero is off the beaten track for most tourists but for those who have the interest and time to explore the more remote natural areas, this is a uniquely beautiful part of Italy.
The coastline stretches over about 20km with small coastal towns and numerous Blue Flag beaches (the European award given to outstanding beaches).
There are many lovely beachside towns along this beautiful coastal strip.
We decided to chose one and drove to Numana where we spent 3 - 4 hours. The highlight of the day was swimming at Spiaggia dei Frate (see separate review).
This was a stunning beach where the white limestone cliffs of Monte Conero dropped right down to meet the Caribbean-coloured waters.
Above the beach, is the Piazza Nuova, a panoramic lookout point with views of Monte Conero. From here you can see a long stretch of the Riviera del Conero coastline.
In hindsight, we could have very easily combined both Numana and Sirolo which are very close together. If I was doing it again, we’d plan to spend time in both towns in the one trip.

Piazza del Popolo is centrally located in the heart of the city and is surrounded by a medieval palazzo, porticoes and the Gothic Church of St Francis. There’s a lot to see here, concentrated in the one spot.
The two main historic sights are the church and the Palazzo dei Capitano de Popolo.
The 13th - 14th century palazzo is next to Meletti’s. It’s the one with two clocks and a tall, central tower. We sat on the front steps in the sun here and soaked up the piazza atmosphere. Later we watched as a large wedding party arrived and then appeared on the Romeo-and-Juliet style corner balcony on the top floor for photos.
The monumental Church of St Francis was started in 1258 but took some 300 years to finish (entry is free).
Attached to it and fronting onto the piazza, is a long, verandah-like structure - the Loggia dei Mercanti. This was built by the powerful guild of wool merchants in the 16th century. A small craft market was being held in the loggia when we were there and we were able to watch an interesting display of fine, traditional lace-making.
The highlight in the piazza is the historic, Michelin listed Caffe Meletti. This is where the aromatic herbal liqueur, Meletti, was first created in 1870. It’s definitely something to try while in Ascoli Piceno.

Beautiful borgo with nedieval streets, eassy to access with a car or with the turistic train. Verry difficult to find a place to eat if you dis not book. Some of the owners or restaurants may be a bit arogant.

it is our favorite beach - wild - long and no umbrella renting. the way down and up is challenging - the less you carry - the better it is - good shoes are recommended although there are people with flip flops
very disappointing the restaurant - not for the food which is acceptable- but for all the plastics they started to use - awful! a year ago they still served in ceramic plates - now just one way plastic - a big step backwards what a pity and what a shame.
Fun is putting on the body the loam which you find at the end on the left of the beach watching the water (called also il trave)
do not stay too long on that side as sometimes peaces of mountain fall down ...
