- DarrinAuckland, New Zealand10 contributionsBest view of the city, wouldn’t bother about Boboli gardens as the view from the Michel Angelo plaza is crazy good. Didn’t get there for the sunrise or sunset but put it on your list.Written September 6, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TheCityBreakersLancashire194 contributionsThis gallery was the main reason we visited Florence on a day trip from Rome, although the whole town is lovely of course.
We pre booked tickets and once we understood the queuing system for the timed tickets, entrance was quite smooth (considering the volume of people).
The palace is beautiful and as with other museums in Italy, there are gorgeous art works on the ceiling as well as the walls. I particularly went to see the Botticellis, but there were lots of other fabulous art works. In the end my absolute favourite was the Artemisia Gentieschi painting of Judith beheading Holifernes. A violent scene but very impressive in real life.
There is a lovely terrace and cafe too with a view of the dome of the basilica.Written September 6, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. On the day we visited it was very hot and we had two dogs in tow. So we decided to simply walk around the cathedral to marvel at its grandeur, desperately trying to keep to the shadows to avoid the heated concrete burning the feet of our canine companions.
It was a busy mid week day and there were many tourists like us here. Judging by the queues it looked like getting in would come with a long wait. But never mind, we can, at least say that we enjoyed this chance to appreciate such an historic and iconic building.Written September 8, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Henry M13 contributionsLocated in the midst of the flea market, the entrance was tucked away behind the facade of stores selling leather goods and jewellery. The market was less than crowded and it was not a challenge to settle down. We tried the beef brisket and the roasted chicken from different vendors, both with a side of potatoes and salad. The brisket was mouthwatering, with a nice char to it. The chicken was juicy and tender. We finished the meal with gelato, an italian staple. Overall the food was delectable and appetising.Written August 25, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- futtock21London, UK17,103 contributionsThe Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fuore in Florence is said according to the Florentine guide books to be the third largest cathedral in the world. This is a distinction it shares according to the Milanese guide books with Milan’s Duomo.Written August 29, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - EyekaytooLeverkusen, Germany3,121 contributionsWe more or less stumbled on this beautiful square on our private, family discovery tour of Florence. We spent most of the day just following our noses around - no guide books, tour operators or anything fancy. Just Google maps and my good nose for directioning :-)
But I digress. The Piazza della Signoria is a wonderful place featuring a host of world class marble statues, including a convenient replica of Michelangelo's David and some rather gruesome images of Perseus and Hercules inflicting some mythical savagery. There is also a statue depicting the Rape of the Sabine Women by Giambologna. Hmm...
Neptune is also here in a rather aptly constructed fountain to make him feel at home. The surrounding architecture is stunning as well.
There are also plenty of bars, gelaterias and restaurants here making it a really wonderful place to spend quality time. Oh, and all the artwork is free of charge to marvel at.
It's a popular place, certainly on the hot August day when we were there. I found that the best way to navigate through all the people was to just keep your head down and walk slowly but with purpose. No entrance fees or long queues here, by the way!Written September 4, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We were very lucky to meet up with Dan, whom we had met back in London last year. He is passionate about Florence and knows the history of Santa Croce inside out. He gave us a fantastic guided tour which made all the difference. The best visit of our Florence stay! danharperflorence@gmail.comWritten September 4, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PatchWellingMarlow, UK1,713 contributionsWe were very lucky that our hotel was close to the bridge. It was about ten minutes and it was a lovely walk. But, the bridge was very busy.
It was full of jewellery vendors on the bridge. I was unsure what to expect but not just that!
We were too busy dodging passer by to notice what else was around!
It was very busy stretch of about 300 yards but the structure was impressive and beautiful.
The buildings on the bridge were as I have seen in movies.
It was incredible seeing it in person but it was ashamed that we didn’t really had the opportunity to fully appreciate its architecture..Written September 7, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. You can go inside the first floor without paying but we decided to pay to see more.Written August 31, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kurt CMalta25 contributionsThe Campanile is a very wonderful attraction in Florence. This is my second time that I climbed this campanile. Once again, it was filled with crowds, even though we booked the trip for first thing in the morning. The climb is a bit difficult but at the end very worth it. Highly recommended for tourist who enjoy history and beautiful views. I strongly recommend that you book for first thing in the morning as queues are then very long during peak season.Written June 12, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Cindy12388Toronto, Canada94 contributionsWe reserved entrance and arrived 845am. With electronic tickets downloaded to my cell phone there was no need to go to the ticketing office. Note that if you reserve but don’t have your tickets with codes (QR & bar code) saved to your phone or printed on paper, then you must wait in ticketing line. Was great to be so early as there were few visitors. A number of rooms and exhibits were closed but there was still much to see. Sadly this has been a very hot spell in Florence. Some rooms had okay air conditioning and my kids could cool off by standing close to the units for a few minutes (the staff sit right beside the AC floor units all day!). But many rooms had no AC or so little that it felt like nothing. And the common areas such as corridors and stairwells without exhibits had no AC were almost unbearably hot. At 9am. For context: we are not people who like really cold buildings, we don’t have AC in our home. So in sum I’d recommend in hot months to go early morning with reservations.Written August 17, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - PatchWellingMarlow, UK1,713 contributionsIt was quite a walk uphill to this place, which offered a lovely view of Florence. It took an hour the long way round following the road! But there was a more scenic walkway which we didn’t see during the climb. It was exhausting and hot, so please be prepared. At time some areas were stepper but it was a great exercise.
We did the trip on Sunday which was not too busy as residents were in the basilica (church).
I was particularly sweaty after the climb and the toilet at the viewpoint required coin payment.
The graveyard area was pleasant to explore and culturally really pleasant and peaceful.
There was cab and golf buggy ride to the top if walking is not your thing.
Try it for yourself.Written September 8, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There are side entrances with much shorter queues for those that have paid for to climb the dome or bell tower so make sure you get into the right one!Written April 17, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - BradHong Kong, China174,457 contributionsThe Historic Centre of Florence is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1982). It straddles the Arno River and includes numerous public squares and cobblestone streets lined with historic palaces, churches, museums, loggias filled with sculptures as well as hotels, retail shops and endless places to have a coffee, cornetto, gelato, panini or enjoyable sit down meal. Visitors can spend several days enjoying the beautiful Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings and architecture as well as the world class art and sculpture viewing opportunities along with great food and wine in Florence.
Of Europes many popular sightseeing cities, Florence has to be up there with the very best when it comes to beauty and volume of things to do, see and taste. Given it's proximity to Rome and other Italian gems, makes it particularly convenient to include for holiday making in Italy. While some just pass through for a night or two, it would be best to allow 3-4 nights if at all possible. By then, most will have had their fill and be ready to move on. Yet, Florence and Renaissance enthusiasts will easily find stays of up to a week or more reasonable as well. We have been fortunate to have been able to make a handful of 4 night stays in the city over the years and have never managed to complete our sightseeing or dining bucket lists during these visits, always leaving quite a few places for future trips.Written April 14, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
